Charlie Morton will throw a bullpen on Wednesday. (Photo Credit: David Hague) Two key injury updates today from various writers on Twitter (Michael Sanserino, Rob Biertempfel, Tom Singer): **Charlie Morton exited last night’s game with a left foot injury. Morton went back to Pittsburgh to get the foot evaluated. The good news is that it doesn’t seem to be too serious, as Morton will go to Texas to join the team, where he will throw a bullpen to test the foot. Morton will throw his bullpen session on Wednesday. I’m sure that will determine whether he can make his next start, but for now it looks like he avoided any serious injury. **Wandy Rodriguez will throw a 65-70 pitch sim game on Thursday at PNC Park. A few days ago I wrote about the rehab process, and how the Pirates could get Rodriguez back as a starter by piggybacking him. This is another alternative. He wouldn’t be pitching in a real game situation, but he’d be getting his pitches in. After 65-70 pitches, the rehab process usually goes to 5 innings and 80 pitches, then 6 and 90, followed by the first start at 100 pitches. The Pirates could conceivably bring Rodriguez back for that 5/80 start if all goes well in this simulated game.

With a 1-0 win over Yu Darvish and the Texas Rangers Monday night, the Pittsburgh Pirates were guaranteed their first winning season in over two decades! The 2013 MLB season has been a strange one for Pirates fans–

Pittsburgh Pirates: The end of the James McDonald experiment

James McDonald (Courtesy of CBS Sports) The Pittsburgh Pirates have activated James McDonald from the 60-day disabled list and designated him for assignment on Saturday. The Dodgers  selected McDonald in the eleventh round of the 2002 draft, and he ascended through the team’s minor league system and made his major league debut in 2008. He was used primarily as a reliever throughout...

Pirates starter Morton leaves game with injury

Pittsburgh starter Charlie Morton left with an apparent injury in the second inning Sunday at St. Louis. Morton had allowed five runs on six hits and walking two in 1 1-2 innings before manager Clint Hurdle came to the mound. He left after throwing a wild pitch that bounced just in front of the left-handed batter's box, allowing Jon Jay to score and give the Cardinals a 5-0...

Pittsburgh Pirates flamethrower Gerrit Cole will dominate as a reliever in October

In a somewhat surprising decision, Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle announced flamethrower Gerrit Cole will likely be used out of the bullpen during the postseason. After another quality outing on Monday, the 22-year-old Cole (7-7, 3.48 ERA) has now recorded 75 strikeouts over 98.1 innings. Chosen first overall out of UCLA in 2011, the 6-foot-4, 220 pound Cole consistently...

Tyler Glasnow is the Pirates Prospects 2013 Minor League Pitcher of the Year. (Photo Credit: Tom Bragg) The Pittsburgh Pirates have placed a large focus on pitching in recent years, either through the draft, international markets, or in the free agent bargain bin. For that reason, you’d expect a lot of competition each year for the top performing pitcher in the system. There were...

Charlie Morton takes the mound with first place on the line

There have been a couple of points in the last month where it was easy to say, "If the Pirates don't start playing better, they're going to be in third place soon," but with the Reds just a game behind them, playing great baseball right now and an easy schedule ahead, we're really entering into the Third Place Danger Zone. When the Pirates went out west to play...

Every Pirates Pitcher With Doug Drabek's Mullet and Mustache

Last night the Pittsburgh Pirates won their 82nd game of the 2013 season, a remarkable accomplishment for a franchise that hasn't sniffed .500 since George H.W. Bush was our president and I had a Commodore 64. In a 162-game season, 81 wins got the team to .500-at-worst...82 takes the Buccos over the hump and into "winning season" territory. THIS IS FINALLY HAPPENING...

Pirates' Starling Marte activated; limited to pinch-running

24-year-old outfielder Starling Marte has been activated from the disabled list. He had been dealing with a contusion on his right hand, suffered on August 10th against the Rockies when he was hit by Josh Outman. Marte continued to play for the next week before needing to be officially sidelined. #Pirates have activated Starling Marte off the DL — Rob Biertempfel (@BiertempfelTrib...

Pirates Playoff Odds: Bucs Now Underdogs in NL Central

The Pirates are now underdogs in the NL Central after being swept by St. Louis over the weekend. (Photo Credit: David Hague) So it turns out being swept by the St. Louis Cardinals hurts your chances of winning the National League Central division. The Pittsburgh Pirates dropped all three games at Busch Stadium this weekend, by a margin of 26-10, to move from odds-on division favorite...

The Pittsburgh Pirates have made their own history

We told you it would happen – and it happened. In dramatic fashion, the Pirates went into Texas where they had previously never won a game and beat Yu Darvish 1-0 on a Pedro Alvarez double. When Mark Melancon induced a ground ball to second baseman Neil Walker, it ended 21 long years of futility. Gerrit Cole threw a gem of a game and the possibly MVP Andrew McCutchen had two hits...

The Pirates (82-61) didn't get a runner to second base against Darvish (12-8) until Marlon Byrd's two-out double in the seventh...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Texas Rangers – Game 144

82 wins.  Our long national nightmare is over. And what a job by Gerrit Cole last night.  Throwing the team and the city on his back and doing everything he could to win that game. I hate to say the Pirates need this series but we’re under 20 games.  The Pirates have a ton of…
