As most of the BB&G crew was out and about this weekend unable to post about the fantastic sports weekend we had, I thought I would do a quick review.

Pirates:

  • Even though the Pirates lost the home opener to Philadelphia on Thursday, 1-0 they bounced back in spectacular fashion.  They took down the Phillies on Saturday night in the 10th inning after Rod Barajas doubled to center field and just missed a walk off home run by a few inches, it wasn’t looking good two outs later with McKenry (who was running for Barajas) was stranded on third.  But then Presley hit to shortstop and outran the throw to first while McKenry scored to end the game in the 10th.
  • Then on Sunday they did it again.  This time in the bottom of the 9th, with the score tied 4-4 a very similar scenario.  Casey McGehee doubled to center.  Alex Presley sacrificed to move Josh Harrison (who was running for McGehee) to third base.  Jose Tabata then struck out, leaving the Pirates with a man on third and two outs.  Enter Andrew McCutchen who took it to a full count including two foul balls before singling to deep center knocking in the game winning run.
  • The Pirates took the opening series against the Phillies 2-1. The Pirates head out west for 9 games, 3 each at the Dodgers, Giants and Diamondbacks before returning to Pittsburgh to face NL Central foes and defending World Series champion St. Louis.

Penguins:

  • In a game that meant virtually nothing to either team, because there was nothing really to lose or gain, the Penguins beat the Flyers for the first time in Consol Energy Center 4-2 to end a crazy regular season.  But there were some great things that game from the game.
  • Pascal Dupuis scored a goal in this game, extending his point streak to 17 games which is really amazing.  He’s been playing so great down the stretch.
  • And the big one Evgeni Malkin scored his 50th goal on Saturday!  It’s the first time in his career he’s scored 50 goals and he’s talked about reaching that milestone in the last couple of weeks.  And you can tell how excited he is watching the replays (see below).  Malkin ends the regular season with 109 points (50 goals, 59 assists) in 75 games, running away with the Art Ross Trophy for the second time in his career.

  • The Penguins will start their run for the Cup on Wednesday night at home against the Flyers at 7:30pm.  Here’s the full first round for the Pens.
