Butler-xavier
BOSTON–With the Utah Jazz in town, a familiar face in Al Jefferson has now been replaced by a familiar face to Celtics coach Brad Stevens in Gordon Hayward. After starring for Stevens at Butler, Hayward has gone on to become one of the most promising swingmen in the league and, more importantly, a restricted free agent this summer. A week after Hayward failed to agree to an extension with the Jazz, rumors of a Butler reunion in Boston began to take over the NBA blogosphere. While the logistics of that reunion are tricky, there is no question that the love is still there between Hayward and his former coach. “Well, he’s just a great guy, number one,” Hayward told reporters before the game. “I loved what he stood for as a person and treated everyone that he recruited as family. I loved that about it. “It was a family atmosphere first and foremost. And then obviously, the basketball was pretty great as well. He’s a good coach and I liked what he stood for.” Stevens essentially said the...

Advanced stats say Celtics one of the best defensive teams in basketball so far - credit to Brad Stevens?

I thought that it would be interesting to take a look at the Celtics from an advanced stats perspective through five games played. Knowing full well that five games isn't a large sample size, and that the Cs competition has been pretty weak thus far. Here's what I found (all stats from Synergy Sports). Offensively: Well, how do I put this nicely: The Celtics, as currently...

Afternoon Delight: Ainge rips Stevens after win over the Jazz

Many Celtics fans were rejoicing over the Celtics first win of the young season last night, but not everyone was happy. Celtics Life investigative reporter Rondo Burgundy is reporting that Danny Ainge lit into Coach Brad Stevens in the Celtics locker room after the rookie NBA coach's first win. Here is a transcript of the exchange: Stevens: Excited to get our first one under...

Stevens Gets First Win Against Former Protege Hayward - The Garden Report

BOSTON -- With former Butler protege Gordon Hayward visiting, Brad Stevens was all smiles before the game. But he was even happier afterwards, as his Celtics got their first win of the season with a 97-87 victory over the Utah Jazz. Brandon Bass led the C's with 20 points while Gerald Wallace grabbed nine rebounds in a "7th man" role as he reluctantly called it. The...

Hayward Wasn't Seeking Max Deal From Jazz

The Utah Jazz and Gordon Hayward were unable to agree upon a contract extension and he will become a restricted free agent this offseason. Hayward was not seeking a four-year, max contract worth more than $60 million, according to reporting from ESPN's Marc Stein. Stein believes Hayward will find a deal in that neighborhood in free agency with teams like the Phoenix Suns and...

Celtics Minute with Emily Austen for 11/7

In today's Celtics Minute, the theme seems to be consistency. Brad Stevens was happy with the Celtics ball movement on Wednesday night against the Jazz. He liked that they didn't over dribble and that they made the extra pass. But, the challenge is going to be to do it again, and again, and again. Brandon Bass also shares his thoughts on the win and what the Celtics...

Celtics Minute with Emily Austen for 11/6

The Celtics have lost 4 close games. They have fought in them and have played hard but can't seem to carry that fight into the last 2 minutes of the game. Brad Stevens points to turnovers as having cost the Celtics, especially down the stretch. Sully thinks the team just speeds up too much, which makes sense. Regardless of the reasons for them, the Celtics need to find...

Celtics give Stevens first NBA win

Boston Celtics co-owner Wyc Grousbeck went onto the court right after the final buzzer sounded to pull aside the game ball for coach Brad Stevens. It took five games, but the Celtics finally helped Stevens earn his first NBA victory. ''I'm going to celebrate for a whole 12 minutes, and then I'm going to start watching Orlando and trying to figure them out,'...

Videos: Postgame interviews after Jazz game

Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck grabbed the game ball for Brad Stevens after his first career win in the NBA. Stevens said, “Winning’s more fun than losing." Isn't that the truth. Olynyk scored 14 points off the bench, and apart of the starting unit in the second half. Kelly has made his case for a starting job, and if he continues to play like this. Then I see no reason...

Celtics beat Jazz 97-87 for Stevens' first NBA win

Brandon Bass scored 20 points and Jeff Green added 18 to lead the Boston Celtics to their first win of the season, 97-87 over the Utah Jazz on Wednesday night. The game reunited new Celtics coach Brad Stevens with Gordon Hayward, the Butler star who took the Bulldogs to the NCAA championship game against Duke and just missed a shot from inside half court that would have won it....

Will the victory over the Jazz become a trend? Not so fast...

The Boston Celtics collected their first win of the season Wednesday night at home against the Utah Jazz. It was Brad Stevens' first NBA victory, which means five games into the season the Celtics now sit at 1-4. The win sparked a little bit of a debate between Celtics Life writers here, many of whom predict the Celtics as a 30 win team or better. I just can't see it. One...

Starter shuffle: Crawford in, Wallace out

Gerald Wallace will not be starting tonight’s game.  He’s going to the bench, a move Brad Stevens says will help both starters and the bench “[Bradley and Crawford will] both play point, they’ll both handle the ball,” said Stevens. “I think we’re able to run a bigger variety of things with both guys in than we are with one guy in over the other. Our offensive numbers...

Time not on Kris Humphries’ side yet

Brad Stevens is learning to deal with what every NBA coach must as he takes the step from the college game. But beyond the longer schedule and longer games and a schedule designed by the Marquis de Sade Travel Agency, the Celtics leader has yet another challenge. While most coaches don’t need to worry much about the end of their bench because it’s inhabited by raw youngsters...

Gerald Wallace Hesitant with New Role

The Boston Celtics won their first game of the season on Wednesday night, defeating the Utah Jazz 97-87 at home. It was Brad Stevens’ first regular season win as an NBA coach, a genuine monkey-off-the-shoulder story if anything. You would think only positive things would come from the night. However, issues still persist with Gerald Wallace and the Celtics brass. Wallace, the 31...

Celtics at Magic 11/8 Preview

Winning streaks start at two wins right? Tonight the Celtics are back in action in Orlando against the Orlando Magic. I'm not exactly sure how they are doing it, but the Magic are going for the fourth win in a row. The Orlando are coming off of a win over the Clippers, a team streaking towards the Western Conference Finals. The Celtics are coming off of a win over the Jazz...

Green Envy: What Jazz Fans Said - 11/6

Well, well, well! Who has 30 thumbs and their first win of the season? The 2013-14 Boston Celtics! The victory over the Jazz tonight not only marks Brad Stevens first win in the NBA, but the beginning of a season full of legitimate "Anything Is Possible" moments.
