The National Motorsports Press Association (NMPA) issued a release on Monday, announcing that NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Jeff Gordon has been honored with the 2011 NMPA Speedway Motorsports Spirit Award.
Gordon was honored for his work with children’s health issues. He traveled to a refugee camp in the Congo in July as part of an effort to aid with that cause.
Gordon has specifically had an interest in children’s cancer research through his Jeff Gordon Children’s Foundation Pediatric Cancer Treatment Research organization.
He was chosen for the 2011 honor after being one of four quarterly winners. Gordon was recognized in the third quarter.
Bobby Labonte and JTG Daugherty Racing were the first quarter winners as a result of their efforts to raise awareness for bone marrow research and donation.
Jamie McMurray was the third quarter honoree for getting involved in tornado relief in his hometown of Joplin, Mo.
