Gary Bettman's recently proposed that the members of the NHLPA and the owners meet without the commissioner and the head of the NHLPA, Donald Fehr. You know, to hash it out between the actual interested parties, not between the representitives of thoe parties. The players seem a bit hesitant about this, especially if all owners aren't represented.
Why not just streamline the process? Have the two representatives go toe to toe in a mano a mano battle royale? I think that sounds like a swell idea, and so do the Grand Rapids Griffins. Witness this scene from an intermission from last Saturday's game against the Peoria Rivermen:
Looks good to me!

Gary Bettman's not the most popular commissioner in North American sports history. The fact that many -- and I emphasize many -- believe he and twenty-nine NHL owners are in the right speaks to how well they've handled these labor talks on a macro-level.
The seismic shift in opinion isn't one I envisioned happening just...
Earlier this week, the NHL and NHL Players Association met with mediators to see if wasting more money could help put an end to this NHL lockout, and how did it turn out? Well, you’re not watching hockey highlights right now, so it obviously didn’t go well. So where do we go from here? Negotiations between the two sides aren’t going well at all. Hell, they can’t even agree...
via Mark Everson of the NY Post,
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman’s latest idea for this lockout’s end-run around the Players’ Association’s officials — direct talks between an unspecified number of owners, who are professional businessmen, and a number of players, who are professional athletes — could mean an absence of union advice in the talks.
The talks would...

Most hockey insiders believe the league won’t wait as long as it did in 2004-2005, when NHL commissioner Gary Bettman declared on Feb. 16, 2005, that the plug was being pulled. More likely, the season would be canned this time in January, an arbitrary deadline that is fast approaching, after the latest effort, mediation, got nowhere...

Bit of a quick blog post here, but I wanted to gauge public reaction after Gary Bettman's proposal to the NHLPA was made public. Via Kevin Allen at USA Today:
After two days of talks with officials from the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service failed to bring NHL owners and players closer to a deal...

All I want for Christmas (Hanukkah) is Gary Bettman's resignation ... If the Leafs are the only NHL franchise worth $1 billion -- and that tramples the majority of NHL teams -- why aren't the Leafs owners larger figures on the NHL stage?
The NHL and the players' association have agreed to a meeting with selective owners and players, but without NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman or union chief Donald Fehr.
Bettman proposed the unique meeting on Wednesday when talks broke off following two days of negotiations with federal mediators, and it wasn't agreed to until Sunday. The meeting is expected to occur Tuesday...

I see that the lockout doomsday clock now reads 11:50 PM. After the Board of Governors meet to tacitly approve the cancelation of the 2012-2013 season, some progress may be made in a last-ditch effort to save the season...
But I doubt much will get done until the last bit of leverage Gary Bettman, Bill Daly and the Board can take off the negotiating table is gone, and we're...
NEW YORK (AP) -- Traditional labor talks have made little progress in the ongoing NHL lockout, so the league and the players' association are going to try something different in an attempt to save the season that is slipping away.
A crew of six owners will meet with a handful of players on Tuesday in New York -- one day before the league's board of governors meeting -- without...

After an entire weekend was spent hammering out the details and formatting, the NHL and NHLPA finally agreed to ditch part of their representation and renew discussions on Tuesday in the hope of reaching a new collective bargaining agreement.
The plan? Temporarily remove Gary Bettman and Donald Fehr from the equation, and hope that a...
