Found May 03, 2014 on The Packers Guru:
According to ESPN.com’s Rob Demovsky, the Packers won’t exercise their 2015 option on offensive tackle Derek Sherrod. Sherrod, a 2011 first-round draft pick, has been eligible for a fifth year with the team since signing his rookie contract, something that obviously won’t be happening now. Anyway, Demovsky points out in his article that, beginning in 2011, all first round picks did get 4-year deals with options for fifths, so I guess this move really isn’t that surprising. The decision on whether or not that final year will be picked up had to be made by this weekend, so the Pack making this announcement now wasn’t exactly random. Also, considering that Sherrod is somebody with a history of injuries, picking up his option year without seeing if he can actually play wouldn’t be a wise decision. So far in his career, the former Mississippi State star has yet to start a regular season game, breaking his leg in December 2011 (causing him to miss the entire 2012 season) before playing ju...

Packers GM: ‘No evidence of any decline’ in Julius Peppers play

Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson doesn’t see a decline in Julius Peppers’ play, even at 34. “Well, 34 is not so old,” said Thompson, per the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “Not for some of us. There’s no evidence of any decline in his play, in our opinion. He still has the same athletic traits that he had coming out. He’s had a remarkable history in the...

Packers, Mike McCarthy working on contract extension

According to Bob McGinn of JSOnline, the Green Bay Packers and head coach Mike McCarthy are working on an extension. McCarthy, 50, will be going into his ninth season as the Packers coach and in eight seasons he's racked up an 82-45-1 regular season record with a 6-5 playoff performance and a Super Bowl championship.

The best special teams player in Green Bay Packers history is still the roster

When a team drafts a special teams player it is typically because there is a desperate glaring need at that position that can no longer be ignored or filled via free agency. Kickers and punters are frequently found as un-drafted free agents. In 2007 as the Packers were still trying to recover from the departure of the team’s all-time leading scorer and long-time kicker Ryan Longwell...

Report: Packers don’t pick up Derrick Sherrod’s fifth-year option

The Green Bay Packers have decided against exercising he fifth-year option of offensive lineman Derrick Sherrod. The team does not plan to exercise the fifth-year option on his contract, according to an NFL source. That means the former first-round pick would become a free agent after this season. It’s really crazy that Sherrod has never started an NFL game after being taken in...

Packers Need Production From Former First Rounders

The past four first round selections by the Green Bay Packers have not provided much of an impact. The lack of production can be in large part blamed on injuries. Bryan Bulaga, the first round selection in 2010, missed the entire season in 2013. In 2012 he missed the last seven games regular season games and the two playoff games. When healthy, Bulaga is arguably the second best...

GM Ted Thompson: People who say we don’t use free agency are wrong

Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson is tired of hearing how the team doesn't pursue free agents and are tight with the purse strings. Thompson isn't fond of being branded as a personnel man who doesn't do anything in free agency.

Thompson: 'No evidence of decline' in Peppers' play

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Twelve years in the NFL hasn't slowed Julius Peppers one bit. Well, that's the belief of Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson, who made a rare venture into free agency this offseason by signing the 34-year-old defensive star. Thompson wasn't concerned about Peppers' age. He wasn't worried about the mileage that 184 career starts has...

Report: Packers Working On A Contract Extension For HC Mike McCarthy

Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that the Packers have been working on a contract extension for HC Mike McCarthy this offseason. McCarthy, 50, still has two years on his current agreement, but team President Mark Murphy is apparently working to lock up his head coach for the foreseeable future. His current contract was reportedly a  five-year contract...

The best kickers in Packer history

Nobody really knows why kickers are a part of football, but they are. Their job description is unlike any other and they are more frequently the goat than the hero. The Packers have had a good amount of good kickers in their history, but the trademarks of the best kickers are consistency and longevity. Here are the five best kickers in the Packers’ illustrious history. You may...

Packers 2014 Draft Musings - Part 1

At long last, we're finally getting around to addressing the 2014 NFL Draft and what the Green Bay Packers might do during the draft. It's about time, don't you think? After all, it's just four days away. We've never done mock drafts here at PackerFansUnited.com for one main reason: we generally think they are a waste of time. At least, for us. Really, the odds...

Packers and Seahawks get raw end of deal with season opener

I am not one for sports conspiracies. The belief that games are fixed or decisions are made in favor of one team over another is usually caused by one thing: jealousy. So, before I begin this rant, I want one thing to be clear: I am not jealous of the Seattle Seahawks, San Francisco 49ers, or any other franchise in the NFL. The Packers and their fans are the greatest aspect of the...

NFL Packers add New Steve Marshall Mexico States’s to coaching staff

The Green Bay Packers have added to their coaching staff.  New Mexico State confirmed that offensive line coach Steve Marshall has accepted a position to become the Packers assistant line coach.  Martin previously spent time in the NFL with the Houston Texans (2002-2005) and the Cleveland Browns (2007-2008). New Mexico State head coach Doug Martin shared, “Obviously we hate to...

Packers must start looking into their future with Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy

A few days from now Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy will sit in adjoining seats at the close of their ninth draft together for the Green Bay Packers. No National Football League team can match the Packers for consecutive years of service in the jobs of general manager and coach. Nine years is an eternity in the fickle business of pro football, but Mark Murphy apparently wants to...

Undrafted But Not Unwelcome

Any prospect not selected in next week’s draft should sit by his phone and pray the Packers call. It’s truly amazing how much success the organization has had with undrafted free agents. And it’s not like these players just filled out the very bottom of the roster in 2013. Cornerback Sam Shields and center Evan […]
