Found December 10, 2012 on Puck Drunk Love:
Happy Holidays, NHL fans! What better way to celebrate the Holiday season than by watching two greedy groups of people squabble over how to reach common ground over our favorite sport?  Darren Dreger announced through Twitter that the NHL will cancel all games through December 30th, officially making Gary Bettman our Scrooge and Donald Fehr our Grinch of the 2012 Holiday season.  The NHL canceling another chunk of games barely qualifies as news these days. In fact, at this stage it was almost a certainty that more games would be cut as the last round of cancelations only lasted through the 14th of December.  The optimist might believe that considering the two sides aren't too far off from a deal that we might be enjoying hockey on New Year's Day. The pessimist (perhaps the realist) will use today's cancelations and the various quotes from the two sides as further proof that 2012-13 is likely doomed.  It can be assumed that this might be the final warnin...

Bettman On Gambling On Hockey In New Jersey

from John Brennan of NorthJersey.com, Wrapping up our five-part series on the depositions of the czars whose sports leagues are suing New Jersey to try to prevent sports betting at the state’s casinos and racetracks, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman had his turn on Nov. 19. During a couple of hours of testimony, Bettman echoed similar themes to his colleagues’ depositions...

Gary Bettman at the angriest I've ever seen him

In all the years I've been watching hockey, I've never seen Gary Bettman this angry. The world's most hated commissioner has his own "Boo Montage" on Youtube. He's been "wanted dead" by David Bolland. He's been called an "idiot" by Red Wings defenseman Ian White. Last night, in a press conference, Bettman lost his cool. Bettman&...

There Won’t Be A Partnership

from Andrew Gross of The Record, When the inevitable happens and Gary Bettman steps on the podium in the next week or two (or three) to announce the end of his latest lockout, there’s one word the NHL commissioner-for-the-owners must strike from his lexicon lest he insult the ever-dwindling number of people who still care about his league. "Partnership." ...

Determining The Wiggle Room

from Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe, The question is whether Fehr has pushed too far. Last Thursday in New York, two days after the sides agreed on having one of the most constructive bargaining sessions yet, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman stamped out any hints of optimism. Bettman pulled everything off the table, including $300 million in the make whole provision. The...

Amnesty Talk

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post, It’s about money outside of the system, Canceler-in-Chief Gary Bettman and deputy Bill (The Hill) Daly maintain in turning a studied blind eye to the pain 10 NHL teams will endure trying to comply with the cap without a mechanism to ease compliance. For example, the Flyers project to having $2.5 million of space to fill seven spots (about...

Just Off Broadway

from Bruce Arthur of the National Post, Once you got past the burbling emotion of Gary Bettman’s aria in New York last week, which deputy commissioner Bill Daly occasionally turned into a duet, it was a rich tale in more ways than one. It was a tale of deceit and disingenuousness, of betrayal and intransigence, of villains and the gracious barons who are trying to reform them...

More Cancellations, More Mediation for NHL

Why can't we all just get along? In the case of the NHL, why can't you all find some middle ground and get a new collective bargaining agreement?Seeing as the most recent (and most promising) talks broke down, the NHL found it in their hearts to cancel two more weeks of games.  Like the Soup Nazi on Seinfeld, Gary Bettman keeps telling us, "No hockey for you!"His...

Sunday Morning Hockey Notes

from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun, - Social media has raised the emotional awareness of the NHL lockout in all kinds of ways. Labour negotiations are not really intended to be covered as play-by-play vehicles. But when they are — and they are now — you get the instant emotion, the disappointment, the tears, the threats, the anger the angst from those involved and from...
