PLAYERS: D.J. Hayden
TEAMS: Oakland Raiders
ESPN ran a great Tom Rinaldi-narrated piece on Sunday featuring Raiders first-round draft pick D.J. Hayden‘s journey from the brink of death last November to the NFL. Hayden ripped a crucial vein in his chest that leads directly his heart after accidentally taking a knee to his chest in practice. The injury has a 95 percent fatality rate. Doctors immediately operated on Hayden with him “minutes away from dying.” Life or death depended on reattaching the vein. To get an idea of difficult the procedure was, here’s the takeaway quote: “Surgeons equated it to sewing together wet pieces of tissue paper.” Here’s the full feature:

One of the most underrated post draft activities is the chase for undrafted free agents. Teams can find diamonds in the rough by combing though their draft boards and finding out who is left. According to Mike Florio of Profootballtalk.com, in the everlasting quest for talent, the Raiders have signed 14 rookie free agents.   Linebacker Billy Boyko, Lehigh Defensive back...

It all starts with Matt Flynn, GM Reggie McKenzie has a plan

Oakland Raiders GM Reggie McKenzie has his quarterback depth chart set and ready. He's going with what he believes is the safest and surest bet, Matt Flynn, with Terrell Pryor slotted in the competing QB category. Now, after the draft, nothing has changed, except Pryor will now have to share that competing role with Arkansas QB Tyler Wilson. “We’re going to begin with...

Like I said, every position...

What Was Tyler Wilson Doing When The Raiders Came Calling?

Former Razorback Tyler Wilson has been a busy man these past few months, so it only seemed natural that when the Oakland Raiders came calling, Wilson was preoccupied with other things. Taking a picture with a fan at Wal-Mart, the Arkansas quarterback lived like he would any other day. While strolling the aisles at his local Wal-Mart, Wilson received a call, which would forever...

Ex-Oakland Raiders assistant coach guilty in beer bottle attack

First and foremost, this looks like a guy that would hit you with a beer bottle… Former Oakland Raiders assistant Randy Hanson is best known for alleging that then-Raiders head coach Tom Cable broke his jaw and teeth in a 2009 hotel fight. Now he can hang his hat on another event. He was found guilty Monday in a San Luis Obispo courtroom of striking a man with a beer bottle at...

Tyler Wilson Answered Raiders Draft Day Call In A Walmart

This story could definitely be taken the wrong way, but I’m just going to assume that Arkansas quarterback Tyler Wilson is comfortable with himself, and most importantly was tired of stressing NFL Draft politics. Wilson was rumored to be drafted anywhere from the 2nd round to the 4th round, so instead of sitting in front of the TV stressing, Wilson continued to live his life. Wilson...

Offseason grades: AFC West

Oakland Raiders Reggie McKenzie has quietly put together one of the best offseasons in all of football this spring. Few seem to realize just how big of a hole the past regime put the second-year general manager in. In 2012, the team had very little salary cap space and didn't have a draft pick until the compensatory picks in the third round. McKenzie went to work in March...

Raiders sticking with Flynn following the draft

A year ago, the Seattle Seahawks brought in Matt Flynn to be their new starting quarterback, but a rookie by the name of Russell Wilson refused to allow Flynn to take on that role, convincing his coaches that he, not Flynn was the right man for the Seahawks starting job. Now, Matt Flynn is in Oakland with a similar position. He's the presumptive starter, with Terrelle Pryor...

2013 NFL Draft Team Grades: Oakland Raiders

First Round: D.J. Hayden, CB, Houstin When I heard this morning that Hayden was being considered as the first or second CB in the draft, I actually laughed. I knew he might sneak into the end of round one despite being a second round prospect, but I never imagined him going this high. His story and return from a life threatening injury is certainly inspiring, but he just isn...
