Assessing the current standings from a basketball point of view, only two programs have a strong chance to add points via basketball. Auburn and Oregon may have fielded the finest football teams in the land this season, but they also trot out two of the worst basketball teams -- both under new management -- as well.
Hoops-wise, Villanova and Louisville are best situated to add to the early points staked by football success. Stanford's historical dominance in multiple non-revenue sports for both men and women could make them one to watch, even if they continue to struggle with hoops success in Johnny Dawkins' second season at the helm.
Given that the program awards $200,000 in post-graduate scholarships to the winning institutions in both men's and women's sports, the rewards are meaningful in an academic and sporting context.
