The Lincoln Journal Star is reporting that former Husker and 14 year major league baseball player, Darin Erstad has signed onto the coaching staff for the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
Erstad will reportedly serve as the team’s hitting coach and an official announcement from the school could come as early as Tuesday morning.
Erstad made his name in Major League Baseball with the Anaheim/California/Los Angeles Angels spending all but three years of his career with that team. His best all around season was in 2000, when he hit .355 with 25 home runs, knocked 100 runs in and also stole 28 bases. Erstad was also part of the 2002 Angels team that won the club’s only world series title.
At Nebraska, Erstad hit .356 over his career and in his final season in college he hit .410 with 19 home runs.
Erstad will attempt to help resurrect a baseball program that has finished last in the Big 12 conference for two straight seasons. Head coach Mike Anderson had been serving as the team’s hitting coach but this move is apparently a signal that he realizes just how hot his seat is with the recent struggles in the program.
