What’s It Going To Take Seattle? Folks, I just don’t get it.  Here we sit in mid-August and your Seattle Mariners are ONE game out of a playoff berth in the current AL standings.  While the stands had 41,000+ fans in seats last night over half of them were there for the Toronto Blue Jays. Uh, hello?  Bueller?  Anyone? Anyone? I just don’t get that people.  This is certainly a more exciting team than the 2007 team that collapsed in early August which is the closest the Mariners have been to the playoffs in more than a decade.  Take a look at what’s going on here. Felix is rewriting the record book in 2014. Felix Hernandez has elevated his game this year to another level.  I didn’t even know another level was possible for a pitcher until now. Felix has an active streak of 16 games where he has gone at least seven innings and given up two or fewer runs.  Do you have any clue how rare that is? Heck, 13 games in a row like that hasn’t happened in over 30 years and streaks only half as long have only happened a handful of times in the past 100+ years. That’s a century of pitching folks! That’s not enough for you? In case you haven’t noticed, and judging by the attendance you haven’t, the Mariners also signed an offensive super-star in Robinson Cano and he’s producing like you’d expect for a player that comes with his price tag. Perhaps you are still hurt by past big money signings like Chone Figgins or Richie Sexson.  I’m tell you– this time it’s different. Robinson Cano- $240 million well spent. Cano is not alone either.  Mike Zunino has to be THE most exciting young catcher in baseball right now. I know what you’re thinking.  Look at his batting average which is a whopping .216. Well, I agree his season average is low but keep in mind this is a guy who was still playing college ball just two years ago. He hasn’t even played 200 games in his MLB career.  He does have numbers though if you dig a little deeper. Zunino has 18 homers on the year.  He’s the AL leader in homeruns for a catcher. His August batting average of .261 is much improved compared to his numbers earlier in the year. Mike Zunino will be first M’s catcher with a 20 HR season. Don’t forget the Mariner’s club record for homeruns by a catcher is just 19 by Miguel Olivo. Yes, the M’s have NEVER had a catcher hit 20 homers in a season.  Zunino is going to do it this year, his very first full year in major league baseball. Still need more?  How about Kyle Seager?  His first All-Star appearance happened for him this year.  He leads the club in RBIs and he’s now figuring out that he doesn’t have to pull the ball all the time. How about the bullpen?  They have the best ERA in the AL.  Those guys just don’t allow runs.  In fact the M’s entire pitching staff ERA is just under 3.00. The last time a team finished with an  ERA under 3.00 was in 1988, a very rare thing to say the least. It’s time to show your support Seattle.  I know you may have been hurt by the M’s in the past but this time it truly is different. This is a chase you’ll kick yourself over if you miss it. The Seahawks may have spoiled you or maybe you have turned to the Sounders but don’t forget about your baseball team, Seattle. They are putting together a season that likely will be long remembered for years to come. Don’t miss it.
