The Indianapolis Motor Speedway made a great announcement yesterday that the late Dan Wheldon will be honored both before and during the 96th Running of the Indianapolis 500.
All rade day patrons admitted through the gates at IMS will receive a pair of white cardboard sunglasses. This is to honor the white sunglasses that Wheldon was seen wearing around the garage and pits during the month of May's spent at the Speedway.
Fans will be instructed to wear the sunglasses on the pace laps as well as Laps 26 and 98. Those lap numbers are to signify the winning car numbers in the two years that Wheldon won the 500. Wheldon won the 500 in 2005 and 2011.
IMS will also honor Wheldon by having his team owner from last year Bryan Herta drive the exact same No. 98 William Rast Honda that Wheldon won the just one year ago around the track before the command to start the engines.
I think this is great what IMS is doing and I think it will be very emotional for the 300,000+ spectators at IMS for the Indianapolis 500 next Sunday.
