Indianapolis, IN- It’s hard to believe we’ve already made it to the season finale for the Izod IndyCar Series. Despite the long breaks in the schedule it seems like it was just yesterday that James Hinchcliffe was crossing the finish line for the first time in the young Canadian’s career at the Grand Prix of St. Pete back in March. Now, it’s time to crown a champion as the series races under the lights in Fontana for the second straight year to close out this year’s campaign. Last year it was Ed Carpenter coming home victorious in Fontana as Ryan Hunter-Reay won the championship. Will Carpenter be able to do it again? He claimed his first win as a driver/owner when he won last year’s MAVTV500 but hasn’t won since. It was the second straight season though he won the season finale. That streak will be put on the line Saturday night as Carpenter will try and take his No. 20 Fuzzy’s Premium Vodka Chevrolet to victory lane for the third straight season ending race. My money right now is on Carpenter. He’s been dominant on ovals his whole career and has been very strong on ovals this season. He started on the pole for this year’s Indianapolis 500 and has four top 10 finishes on the season which just happened to be on the four ovals we’ve raced at this year. He was so strong there last year and figures to be yet again this weekend. It would cap a decent season for Carpenter where the pole at Indy was a huge achievement for him but a win would go a long way too. Eric Smith is the Lead Motorsports Writer for Race Review Online.
