Indianapolis, IN- Two things are almost always a certain every year. Scott Dixon will dominate Mid-Ohio and the championship points battle will take a big swing leaving the 13-turn road course. Last year, Dixon and Simon Pagenaud made up some huge ground on Will Power and Ryan Hunter-Reay as both had some bad luck in the race that went caution free. This year, championship points leader Helio Castroneves also has struggled historically at Mid-Ohio. Castroneves hasn’t won at Mid-Ohio since 2001 and has finished outside the top 10 in three of the last four Mid-Ohio races. In those same three races where Helio failed to score a top 10, Scott Dixon who enters this weekend the winner of the last three IndyCar races won those events. If that trend stays true through this weekend we’re looking at a new points leader. Also, Andretti Autosport’s Ryan Hunter-Reay and Marco Andretti need big weekends as well. The duo’s championship hopes are dwindling by the race as they trail Castroneves by 69 and 70 points respectively. They’re having very solid season’s but Castroneves’ consistency in finishing in the top 10 12 of the 13 races and Dixon’s three straight victories are making them have to race perfect from here on out. Both have run particularly well at Mid-Ohio in the past but need to improve on those finishes and get podiums. Hunter-Reay finished a disappointing 24th last year but has six top 10′s in a row prior including two podiums. Andretti has four straight top 10′s the last four starts there but has yet to crack the top five. That needs to change this weekend as a solid top 10 may not be good enough. Nevertheless, Mid-Ohio will make the points take another swing and the it could separate the contenders and pretenders.   Eric Smith is the Lead Motorsports Writer for Race Review Online.
