It's Time For The Eagles To Put In Work.

Posted July 25, 2013

Jason Kelce gets it. He understands that when it comes down to it OTAs aren’t going to really tell what a player is made of or how that player can handle live action. This is the reason why Chip Kelly hasn’t made a choice on his quarterback or even his team for that matter. That’s why Kelce decided to come in earlier and put his bones in. Kelce has finally been cleared to start practicing and he decided to get in before the rest of the vets. He’s going to need a lot of work to knock off the rust. He’s been gone a long time, but he understands that with Chip Kelly it isn’t about what you DID, it’s about what you’re DOING.

[“You can run it as much as you want in minicamps and OTAs, but the time you really learn the most is when you are under the fire,” Kelce said. “Once we start putting pads on and are in live situations, that’s when you learn the best. You don’t have time to process things. Everything happens faster.”]

You see it doesn’t matter that a player makes plays work in shorts. It doesn’t matter if a guy so far hasn’t made waves. What matters is what these players do with the time they are given and how the respond to another team laying the wood. People are creatures of habit. When all else fails they are going to revert back to what they did before. It’s what’s comfortable to them. So when the stuff hits the fan and plays start breaking down, Kelly is going to have to decide which of his players handle that adversity best. It may not be the 10-year veteran learning a new system. We all know the old saying “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” That’s why Kelly hasn’t made a choice on his quarterback or his roster for that matter. Understand Kelly is coming from a perspective of players have to prove it. Good or bad past performances do not matter to him. It’s what have you done for me lately. So when you see all the talking heads assume who is going to start for the Eagles don’t fall into their traps. What we see out there on the field is what counts. This season it wont be a case of players sitting on the sidelines nursing injuries and making the team while the other guy is out there putting in work, and getting better. This time players can’t just go through the motions and simply know they will be starters. None of these players have that kind of clout with this coach. This time it’s about working hard to make this team. Hopefully that hard work and competition will transition into wins during the season. The competition will turn average players into good players. Good players into great ones. Hard work and determination beats talent every time.  Remember people it’s not about the dog in the fight. It’s about the fight in the dog.
