If you haven’t been paying attention to the World Baseball Classic (and I honestly can’t blame you if you haven’t), you’ve actually missed some pretty entertaining games. The United States team lost to Mexico on Friday night but bounced back with a win over Italy yesterday. Italy (2-1) is the surprise of the tournament and is already through to the next round. To join them, the U.S. will have to win this afternoon against Canada. Canada also won yesterday, as Chris Leroux delivered a solid start against Mexico (in a game that featured a ninth-inning brawl). The Canadians are in the same situation as the U.S., so today’s matchup is an elimination game. Our neighbors to the north will be sending Bucco prospect Jameson Taillon (a dual citizen of the U.S. and Canada) to the mound as they look to advance, and I think you can call this the biggest start of Taillon’s young career. It will be a cool experience and quite a test for the young righty, as he’ll face a lineup full of big-league all stars. The game is at 4 PM eastern on MLB Network, and Bucco fans should definitely tune in. Elsewhere, Wandy Rodriguez hasn’t pitched yet for the Dominican and Jason Grilli hasn’t appeared since his save on Thursday. Oh, and the Pirates lost two more boring spring training games. They’ll play twice today (against the Orioles and Twins), and the Orioles game will be on 93.7.
