Jason Grilli left tonight’s game with an apparent injury. (Photo Credit: David Hague) Jason Grilli left tonight’s game in the ninth inning with two outs. Grilli threw a fastball to get a first pitch strike, then walked off the mound and called the trainers out. Grilli was getting hit around earlier in the inning, and his fastball was flat. He appeared to be grimacing after a few of the pitches. No word yet on what the injury is, or if there’s even an injury. Vin Mazzaro came on to close out the game with a groundout, giving the Pirates a 6-5 victory. If Grilli goes down, Mark Melancon would be the obvious choice as the new closer. Justin Wilson would be a good choice for the 8th inning man, although it’s possible the Pirates wouldn’t want to use a lefty in that role. Jared Hughes is currently rehabbing in Indianapolis, and threw a shutout inning tonight. By all of the reports I’ve received, Hughes has looked filthy with a great sinker in his rehab work. I wouldn’t be surprised if he...

Taking a Look at the Pirates’ Bullpen Depth

Jason Grilli left tonight’s game with right forearm discomfort. He will be re-evaluated tomorrow, at which point we will hopefully learn more about his situation and whether he will miss any time. Forearm discomfort and a pitcher walking off the mound and leaving the game after throwing a pitch usually don’t result in just a few days off. It’s very possible the Pirates will...

Baseball moves on

Jason Grilli is on the disabled list, but baseball waits for no one. The Pirates have one win in a four-game set against the Nats in which I think three wins is a reasonable expectation. Tonight seems like a decent opportunity to get the second one; Gerrit Cole starts for the Pirates against the Nats' Taylor Jordan. Jordan is a 24-year old rookie that hadn't even made it...

Game 97: Pirates 6 Nationals 5

For eight innings it looked like this was going to be a nice, strong Pirate win. Then Jason Grilli served up a two-run homer to Jayson Werth and left the game three batters later, flexing his right forearm and that's all that anyone can think about. There's absolutely nothing that can be done about Grilli from here; we won't know an initial diagnosis until tomorrow, at...
