Found July 05, 2013 on Oriole Post:
We all pretty much know what happened last night up in the Bronx. After losing two out of three against the lowly Chicago White Sox, the Orioles needed on Friday against the rival New York Yankees. They were on their way there, leading 2-1 in a tight game in the ninth inning. Then, Jim Johnson came into the contest. He imploded again in an ugly ninth inning. The Yankees would win 3-2. Simply put, it is it time to replace Johnson in the closer spot with Tommy Hunter? Hunter has been by far the best reliever on the team with the most upside. Despite Hunter blowing a game on Thursday, he is 3-2 with a 2.09 ERA and is a pitcher reborn in the bullpen. On the other hand, despite a solid run in the past month before this week, Johnson is 2-7 with a 4.02 ERA. Not good. Johnson has simply blown games the Orioles could not afford to lose, and if he had converted simply half the saves that were blown (six in total, so far) – the team would be far better off now. Rely on Brian Roberts? Or will the Baltimore Orioles seek an upgrade?

(Derick E. Hingle – USA TODAY Sports) The Baltimore Orioles addressed one of their needs earlier this week when they acquired starting pitcher Scott Feldman from the Chicago Cubs. What other moves could the Orioles make to bolster their roster? Perhaps the weakest spot in the Baltimore lineup is second base. The name Brian Roberts might as well have been printed in the leadoff...

Their offense slumping, the Baltimore Orioles lose series to ChiSox

Alexei Ramirez avoids Taylor Teagarden’s tag to give Chicago a 1-0 lead in game 3. (AP Photo/Charles Cherney) The Baltimore Orioles offense ran into some struggles in their series loss to the Chicago White Sox, particularly against left-handed pitching. The Orioles (47-37) lost games 1 and 3 against a Chicago team that finds themselves in last place in the AL Central at 34-48....

Chris Davis believes Roger Maris is home run record holder

Baltimore Orioles slugger Chris Davis is on pace to challenge the single season home run record. The player credited with holding that mark is former San Francisco Giants outfielder Barry Bonds, who belted 73 in 2001. However, Davis still considers New York Yankees legend Roger Maris to hold the home run title. Maris bashed 61 in 1961.Davis, who has been openly scrutinized by...

Chris Davis Still Considers Roger Maris Single-Season Home Run Record Holder

If Chris Davis keeps up his current home run pace, he’ll finish one behind the MLB single-season home run record — at least, in his opinion, he will. The Orioles first basemen is on pace for 60 home runs. Even though Roger Maris was passed multiple times in the late ’90s and early ’00s, Davis still considers the former Yankees outfielder the single-season home run champ....

Sportswriter Accuses Chris Davis Of Using PEDs, Did He Cross The Line?

It’s only fair in this day and age of Biogenesis scandals to question anything that seems out of the ordinary. So does this give Chicago Sun Times writer Rick Telander the right to put out an accusatory statement pretty much saying Chris Davis of the Orioles is most likely dirty? Here’s some of the more damning quotes from Telander, read between the lines, if you will: ...

Chris Davis shooting for Maris 61 home run “record”

As Baltimore Orioles 1B Chris Davis has run up 32 home runs before the All Star break, projections have him finishing right at 60 home runs, which would tie Babe Ruth’s total from his historic 1927 season.  And of course one shy of Roger Maris “61 in ’61″, the first player to surpass Ruth.  And according to Davis, this is the real record.  On ESPN Radio’s Mike and Mike...

Chris Davis still views Roger Maris as the single-season home run record holder

Chris Davis arrived at Yankee Stadium Friday night leading the American league with 32 home runs — mathematically putting him on a pace to hit 60 this season. There have only been eight instances where a player has jacked 60 or more homers in a season — six with 63 or more— but the Baltimore Orioles slugger still believes the Holy Grail of home run totals is still Roger Maris...

O's Davis tops fan All-Star vote

Baltimore first baseman Chris Davis has been picked to start for the American League in the All-Star game, drawing the most fan votes in the major leagues for his first selection. The rosters for the All-Star game at Citi Field in New York on July 16 were announced Saturday night. The Orioles have three starters for the first time since Cal Ripken played in 1997. St. Louis, Cincinnati...

Adam Jones takes out hitless night on batting helmet

Adam Jones had a rough night against the New York Yankees Friday but it looks like his batting helmet had it tougher. After striking out against Ivan Nova during last night's 3-2 loss at Yankee Stadium, the Baltimore Orioles slugger did something with his bat he couldn't do all night — hit something. Jones took out his 0-for-4 frustration out on his helmet as he walked...

Preview: Yankees vs Orioles (7/6/13)

Andy Pettitte (5-6, 4.40 ERA) takes the mound in a afternoon game against Chris Tillman (10-2, 3.68 ERA) and the Orioles. Pettitte’s last time out agains the Twins, he surpassed Whitey Ford for the Yankees’ all time strikeouts lead. However, he wasn’t happy with the outing, taking a no decision after serving up a go ahead homer in the sixth. He’s 0-3 with a 5.84 ERA in his...

Red Sox Imitating 2012 Orioles With Walk-Off Wins, Ability to Pick Up Teammates (Video)

What a difference a year makes. Last year, while the Red Sox struggled the Baltimore Orioles became the darlings of baseball with their walk-off wins and general flair for the dramatic. In 2013, it’s the Red Sox’ turn for late winning, with eight walk-off wins before the All-Star break. As Jon Lester tells Tom Caron, it’s all about the team’s ability to pick up their teammates...

Preview: Yankees vs Orioles (7/5/13)

(Photo by Leon Halip/Getty Images) The Orioles are in the Bronx just a week after the three game sweep, and Ivan Nova (2-2, 4.63 ERA) hopes to avoid another against Miguel Gonzalez (6-3 3.77 ERA). Nova will step into the rotation in place of Hiroki Kuroda who suffered a hip flexor and is just missing one start. Nova’s last outing was against the Orioles in Baltimore, a relief...

On Expectations

After the Orioles’ sweep over the Yankees I wrote a post called “The psychology of winning,” then life happened and I didn't get a chance to post it. Basically it was about how this team simply knows how to win. They aren't fazed by the great Yankee mystique anymore and, while the Yankee lineup is terrible, it represented a psychological milestone for this team. ...

Orioles-Yankees Preview

The New York Yankees certainly haven't been immune to the damage Baltimore Orioles slugger Chris Davis has done this season. Davis looks to continue the hot hitting that has aided Baltimore's longest winning streak over its AL East rivals in 16 years as the Orioles open a three-game set at Yankee Stadium on Friday night. After completing a four-game sweep in Minnesota with...
