As pretty much the entire baseball world knows by now, on Friday night, St. Louis Cardinals rookie right-hander Shelby Miller allowed a leadoff broken bat single before retiring the next 27 Colorado Rockies in order.
I asked researcher Tom Orf to help put this almost-perfect game into perspective.
St. Louis Cardinals, 0 walks, 13+ strikeouts
Although I live in the Chicago area and rarely get to see the Cardinals play live, you do not have to watch a game to know when a pitcher utterly dominates a team, which is just what Shelby Miller did on Friday night.
Against a pretty good hitting Rockies team (2nd in the NL in runs scored), Miller gave up a leadoff hit in the first, then proceeded to retire the next 27 batters...
ST. LOUIS Twice, David Freese had departed the batter's box with his head down. His first attempt had ended with a baseball landing in a right fielder's glove. His second with a swing and a miss.
By his third try, he was due.
The St. Louis Cardinals' third baseman hit a Jorge De La Rosa pitch hard toward first, a scorched grounder that found the Busch Stadium grass...
Lots to cover today... let's do some quick hits:
1) This weekend was poised to be one of the most dominant sweeps in St. Louis Cardinals history (more on that in a minute), but turned into the second most gruesome day of the season (Opening Day fiasco being #1). Jamie Garcia didn't bear down when he needed and got tagged for 5 runs. Carlos Martinez had his first real...
(AP) -- St. Louis Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright was off his game the last time out.
The right-hander might not need his best stuff given how the Colorado Rockies are struggling at the plate.
Wainwright and the Cardinals go for their ninth win in 10 games Saturday when this series continues at Busch Stadium.
Looking to rebound from his first defeat of the season, a 2-1 loss to...
Shelby Miller continues to dominate, 7 starts into 2013
Friday, May 10th, 2013, that will be a date that some 37,800 St. Louis Cardinals fans at Busch Stadium will remember for quite a while because young, talented Shelby Miller flat out dominated the Colorado Rockies last night. A leadoff single in the top of the first inning to Eric Young Jr. would be the only base runner...
ST. LOUIS (AP) Adam Wainwright carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning and was one out from the St. Louis Cardinals' second straight one-hitter over the suddenly punchless Colorado Rockies in a 3-0 victory Saturday.
The Rockies had been hitless in 49 consecutive at-bats before Nolan Arenado lined a clean hit to center field with one out in the eighth. Eric Young led off Friday...
On Friday, St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter threw a 70-pitch assortment, pain-free.
The St. Louis Cardinals may be approaching a 40-man roster logjam as top prospects are ready for the major leagues.
ST. LOUIS (AP) Jorge De La Rosa held the St. Louis Cardinals hitless into the seventh inning and Troy Tulowitzki's three-run homer ended Colorado's scoreless streak at 28 innings, sending the Rockies to an 8-2 victory Sunday.
De La Rosa did not allow a hit until David Freese's two-out single in the seventh, answering a pair of pitching gems by St. Louis over the weekend...
John Gast is being called up to St. Louis to replace injured starter Jake Westbrook Tuesday night.
Shelby Miller gave up a leadoff single then retired 27 in a row for his first career complete game, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to a 3-0 victory over the Colorado Rockies.
Eric Young Jr. had a line drive hit to right field to start the game for the Rockies but Miller (5-2) gave up nothing else in his first shutout. The right-hander struck out Young to end it with his 13th K...
The St. Louis Cardinals were expecting to see one of the best offensive teams in baseball this season as the Colorado Rockies came into Busch Stadium Friday night with the second most runs scored in all of baseball. Cardinals' rookie starter Shelby Miller didn't care. He carved the Rockies up in a dominating performance in the Cardinals 3-0 win.
Miller was absolutely outstanding...
The last thing that you’d think would rule a weekend between the St. Louis Cardinals and Colorado Rockies would be pitching. But not only was that the case, it was a historical level of pitching effectiveness. Between Shelby Miller, Adam Wainwright and Jorge De La Rosa, 21 complete hitless innings were tossed, and in the two of the starts, no-hitters were far from speculative;...
