For several years now, the month of October has been marked by two things – Halloween and the color pink. The color pink literally follows you everywhere during this fall month. Turn on the NFL and tough guys are running around in pink gloves, shoes, and wrist bands. Girls all over the country dye a lock of their otherwise normal looking hair bright pink. In all, the color pink has helped to save countless lives while drawing more attention to breast cancer, its effects, its victims, and its survivors. Cancer is a terrible enemy. Most of us have probably been affected by it in some manner – whether it be a family member, close friend, or other loved one. The attention that the color pink has brought to breast cancer – one of the world’s most pervasive cancers – is nothing sort of remarkable. But about ten years ago, some guys in Australia started thinking: it’s great that so many are recognizing this terrible cancer and its affect it has had on the female population…but what about the men? That’s when No-Shave November and Movember started. For the past several years, men have been “sacrificing” for a greater good: men’s health (specifically men’s prostate cancer) by either growing an awesome stache, or choosing to forgo shaving altogether. This is why currently clean-shaven Chris Callaway, among many MSF writers, will be going from this: To this!   The rules are not entirely black and white and are open to a little interpretation, but the jist is this – Stop shaving, start saving lives. Last year alone, Movember raised over $125 million dollars for men’s prostate cancer research. Here at MSF, we have decided to join in on the action for a worthy cause. You can visit our team page here.  In less than 24 hours, we have already raised $80 for the cause…but we know we can do more. November hasn’t even started yet! How can you help? 1. Join the team! (Click here) Quite simply, the more teammates we have, the better. 100 guys can raise more money than 10. If you want to have some fun in November and raise some money for men’s health, there is no easier way to do it. 2. Promote it I’m sure some of you probably look better WITHOUT a mustache than WITH one. That’s okay. Your new mustache will be a fantastic ice breaker with everyone…especially the ladies. KVB has a great girlfriend almost exclusively because his awesome beard. Let some of that Movember mojo work for you! See someone making fun of you? Walk over and tell them what it’s about. You’d have to be cruel AND heartless to make fun of a guy raising money for cancer research. You might even get a pity date out of it. JK. But seriously… 3. Give Feel free to donate to an individual on our team, or the team page in general. Our goal is to raise $2,000 this month. We can’t do it without your help! Rules: Here at MSF, we are an equal opportunity organization.  That being said, we don’t want to leave anyone out. –The rules state that you are to start November completely clean-shaven. However, some of us don’t grow beards as fast as others…and we all know that it can be a little demoralizing to be out-manned so thoroughly by Nicholas Gerlach and others. Don’t let Nick Gerlach and his fantastic beard intimidate you. If that’s the case, go ahead and get your head start.  There is no need to shave tomorrow morning – just remember the cause. – Some guys don’t shave at all, others just grow mustaches. The decision is really up to you. A friend of mine told me he looked like a dirty criminal with a mustache, and he didn’t necessarily want to go that direction. Instead, he is going razor free all month. Perfectly acceptable! Again, just remember the cause. – Have fun.  Maybe you are like the aforementioned Nicholas Gerlach, and you can grow a full, James Harden-style beard in four days. In that case, milk this month for all it’s worth. Shave awesome designs into your beard every week. Go with the stache. Go with the Lincoln. Have fun with the flavor-saver. Do it all. Just remember WHY you are doing it, and keep promoting the cause! – Post as many pics as possible. The best way to promote is by showing people what you are doing. This also makes it hysterically awesome for the rest of us that are participating. For example, Jerod just made this his Facebook and Twitter profile pic to help promote the cause: – Maybe you are like me and work at a more conservative place of work. Maybe they ask you to stay clean shaven. In that case, ask them what you CAN do and do that. In my case, I can grow the beard…but it has to be neat. Every morning, I trim my beard with pride as I get the word out. ***** That’s it!  Let’s go all out this month for Movember!
