As the dust continues to settle in the weeks after the tragedy that involved Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher, his girlfriend and their families, more details have emerged that help explain exactly what happened. Belcher was reportedly having problems with his girlfriend Kasandra Perkins prior to the shooting. One of Jovan’s friends said that they separated two weeks before the incident and that the 25-year-old drank nightly. Another report said that Belcher was out with a different woman the night before the murder-suicide. On Friday, the NY Post cited a source close to the Chiefs that claimed Belcher’s mother told police investigators that Jovan and Perkins were arguing over who the father of their 3-month-old daughter is before he shot Perkins and then killed himself. “The mother believed that there was an issue over whether (Belcher) was the father,” the source reportedly told the Post. “She said he (believed he) wasn’t necessarily the father of the child.” A Kansas City law enforcement source also reportedly confirmed that there was a question about the paternity, adding that there was an implication that Belcher and Perkins may have been arguing about whether or not the child was his. Zoey, the 3-month-old infant, is slated to receive $1 million under the NFL’s life insurance policy from now until she turns 18 — or 23 if she attends college. Sgt. Marisa Barnes, a Kansas City police spokeswoman, said the baby’s paternity will not be part of the department’s murder-suicide investigation. “That would not be something they’re going to investigate,” Barnes explained. “It’s a ‘he-said, she-said’ so there’s no way to investigate. It would be nothing more than a civil matter.“ One thing that seems certain is that the relationship between Belcher and Perkins was extremely rocky prior to the tragedy. Whether or not Belcher is actually the father of their child is something we may never know.
