Former Cub and fan favorite Kerry Wood was asked about the HOF chances of his former teammate Sammy Sosa, and Kerry didn’t waste any words in saying Sosa deserved recognition: “Sammy never failed a drug test, never got caught up in any of that stuff and there’s no evidence that anybody has against him that he did something wrong. As his teammate for many years, he’s one of the guys I remember who came in and was prepared to go every day. What he did in his career was amazing and he deserves some credit for it.” No doubt that’s a begrudging reply from Kerry but it speaks to two things: one, just how great Sammy was, and, two, just how much of a standup guy Kerry Wood is. Look, there is no love lost between Wood and Sosa. Kerry is widely assumed to have been the smasher of the Sosa boombox on that fateful final day of the 2004 season, and he even went so far as to re-enact the incident on a never-aired segment of ABC7 news. Kerry Wood, as is the case with several of Sammy’s ex-teammates, does not like Sammy Sosa. Probably with good reason. Sammy was loud and arrogant, and that’s hardly a charming combination. But therein lies the rub; Kerry put all that **** aside, and said what needed to be said, namely that there’s no proof Sammy did PEDs, that Sammy showed up to play every ******* day, and that he deserves to be recognized for his “amazing” accomplishments. Hear that, Cub fans? Kerry put aside his personal problems with Sosa and recognized him for the great player that he was. It was the act of a serious, rational adult. Hopefully, Sammy’s former employers and fans can someday rise to the meager standard of, you know, acting like adults.
