MOORESVILLE, N.C. – Back in April, Kurt Busch made his first attempt in the NASCAR Nationwide Series at the Richmond (Va.) International Raceway (RIR), posting a win in only his second start with his brother’s Kyle Busch Motorsports (KBM) No. 54 Monster Energy team. Busch has attempted victory with KBM eight times since then and hopes this week’s return to the Virginia short track will produce another successful finish for the first-year team.   At the spring event on the .75-mile oval, KBM recorded its first NASCAR Nationwide Series victory in just its seventh series start. Kurt Busch gave the crowd a thrill, winning a hard-fought, side-by-side battle with Denny Hamlin. Hamlin, who erased a two-second margin over the final 20 laps of the spring event, was unable to complete a last-lap pass on his Sprint Cup Series teammate’s older brother before the two drivers reached the start-finish line. The 0.062 margin of victory was the smallest winning margin in RIR history. Not only did Bu...

Kurt Busch: Are You Ready for Some?

The refrain is a popular one: “Are you ready for some football?” It’s particularly so during this time of year when the college football season has begun and the NFL season is no longer just peeking around the corner but preparing to make a full-on assault on football stadiums and television sets across the country. It’s a new season with new goals and high expectations in...

Kyle Busch: Survive and Advance

During his team’s magical run to the 1983 NCAA men’s basketball tournament championship, the late North Carolina State coach Jim Valvano first made famous the now-familiar phrase, “Survive and Advance”.Since then, each and every March during the NCAA tournament, the phrase continues to be used by coaches and television analysts alike in describing the necessity of surviving...

NASCAR: Is Kyle Busch a Lock for the Second Wild Card Berth?

With one race left in NASCAR's regular season, there is but a single Chase berth still up for grabs. Kyle Busch currently has a tenuous hold on that position as the highest-ranked of the one-win drivers outside of the top 10. The No. 18 is currently 12 points ahead of Jeff Gordon, the nearest challenger for that final coveted spot. But it remains to be seen who will walk...

Busch vs. Gordon for last Chase spot

NASCAR trotted out eight drivers Thursday who are all mathematically eligible to make the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship. In reality, Saturday night's ''regular season'' finale is a race between Kyle Busch and Jeff Gordon for the final berth in the 12-driver field. The two wild card berths are both technically open. But with two wins on the season, Kasey...

It's Busch vs Gordon in race for final Chase berth

NASCAR says eight drivers are racing for the last two berths in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship. It's really down to two for one wild-card berth in the 12-driver field. The last spot is likely a race between Kyle Busch or Jeff Gordon, who both talk as if they are only racing each other Saturday night. Busch can clinch a berth by winning the race, or by losing 12...

Fight for last Chase spot now a duel

Virginia may be for lovers, but this Saturday at Richmond International Raceway will be a battle royale. With the NASCAR Chase for the Sprint Cup field all but decided, typical short-track racing will be all the "rage." Yes, there's still a wild-card spot up for grabs, but that contest likely will come down to Jeff Gordon and Kyle Busch. For all intents and purposes...

Kyle Busch's dominance at Richmond bode well for his Chase chances

Win and your in. It's actually simpler than than. Give up no more than 12 points to Jeff Gordon and no more than 40 points to Marcus Ambrose, and hope that fellow single win drivers Gordon, Ambrose, Ryan Newman nor Joey Logano win on Saturday night, and Rowdy makes The Chase. “Richmond is definitely a place where we would like to win. Obviously, that would really make things...

Bears-Packers wager made by top NASCAR drivers

Typically when NASCAR Sprint Cup Series stars Matt Kenseth and Kurt Busch discuss the “field” it has to do with 41 other drivers and isn’t named “Lambeau,” but on Thursday, Sept. 13 that all changes. Prior to heading to Chicagoland Speedway to kick off the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, Kenseth and Busch will make a friendly wager as the Chicago Bears take on the Green...

Final Chase spot still in question

It was certainly interesting to see that in the first two-thirds or three-fourths of Sunday's race at Atlanta Motor Speedway there were few cautions. That, once again, supports how awesome the NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers are right now. These guys can run the speed that they were running at a mile-and-a-half track that offers little or no grip, slipping and sliding around, and do...

NASCAR limits Hendrick development

NASCAR on Thursday passed a rule that will curb the ability of teams to set their cars up in a way that gives the driver easier rear steer. The technical bulletin issued by NASCAR goes into effect next week at Chicago, when the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship begins, and many believe it is aimed directly at powerhouse Hendrick Motorsports. Drivers have alleged for months...

Last chance

Well folks, I watched the Atlanta race weekend and, while I was not glued to the TV every night of the holiday weekend, I listened to it on Sirius and watched a good bit of it on TV. So I kind of had a feel for what was going on and, I tell you what, I thought those were three of the most bizarre races that we've had all year. Starting out on Friday night with the truck race...
