Lack of signing players during first day of free agency tells me the Eagles are content on losing

Posted March 05, 2010 on DMcnabb4MVP's Blog:

Now, I fully understood that the 2010 NFL free agent class was pitiful to put it nicely. But there were still multiple players to be had on the All-Pro level.

When the Eagles allowed defensive end Julius Peppers to get snagged up by the Chicago Bears, I understood the reasons. He's thirty and probably doesn't have as many years left to play at a high level. So passing on him I didn't fully agree with but I understood.

And when they cut linebacker Will Witherspoon, who we traded a fifth-round pick and a possible play-making receiver for, I thought it was to make room for Karlos Dansby. But then Dansby got snagged up by the Miami Dolphins.

The Eagles not getting Dansby pissed me off, but I was alright because we could still sign safety Antrel Rolle.

But now from what I have just read, Rolle has been signed by our arch-nemesis the New York Giants! If there was one position that we needed help with more then any other it was at Safety and the Philadelphia Eagles big wigs allowed the best safety on the market go to our NFC-east rivals, what the hell does that tell you my fellow Iggles fans?

Well I will tell you what it tells me, it tells me that Andy Reid, Joe Banner and new G.M. Howie Roseman have all but mailed it in for the 2010 NFL season. Not attempting to fill at least one hole with a top tier free agent is what losers who are content with losing do.

  • I really don't want to start another debate but what really confuses me is that earlier today Reid again stated that McNabb is his starter. If the Eagles are going to give McNabb his year they certainly aren't giving him the top tier guys to win it with and it has to make you wonder. I'm not shocked they didn't dive into the pile of older and what was certain to be overpriced free agents on day 1 but if the Eagles think they can fool anybody into thinking they believe they can be a championship caliber team this year by bringing in a couple of 2nd and 3rd tier free agents and by the draft they're only fooling themselves. If they bring back McNabb this year with no plan on giving him an extension it will be such a waste. A waste of draft picks they could have had and a year of development for Kolb and to actually see if he has what it takes to be their quarterback of the future. They still have plenty of time to go out and get a few players but they certainly don't seem in any hurry to set up McNabb to make that last run.
  • yeah if they dont get some help on defense in FA i think they should move dmac. he cant go out and make the defense better. only problem is not too many good players left in FA. Rolle accepted the giants offer they dont want kapman cause of his acl surgery and damn near everyone else got signed. i wouldnt mind them bringing in Jamal Williams we still need some big bodies on the D-Line, beg Witherspoon to resign and sign a good nickel corner like Rod Hood and i still think Sean Jones should come back and be a good FS for us but he needs another offseason in our system. but unless they make some major upgrades on defense this offseason we really dont need to keep dmac cause we cant win with the sh!ty DBs and LBs we have.
  • I agree with the fact that we are fooling our selves if we think we are a superbowl contender. Our "D" is not a playoffs caliber "D". If we can get some linebackers and the safty that makes our "D" the best it was, we have a shot. but untell then. not happening. McNabb is our QB tell he leaves. PERIOD. tired of this every off season. He is still better then 80% of the QBs in the league. Hopefully we can get one of these great saftys coming in the draft and some linebackers in FA. maybe that will be enough. We will see.
  • 04 I agree dmac is still the best qb on the team but if we are gonna rely on drafting an entire defense we are gonna need to pray a whole lot and hope they are amazing don't hit a rookie wall and don't make rookie mistakes. If they give dmac an extension we have a shot in 2-3 years but not this year.
  • shwtmr, You say you are tired of this every season but whether you like it or not THIS is the season that trading McNabb makes absolute sense. The front office did not offer him an extension so obviously it has crossed their mind to let him go after this season. Why not build the team up with more draft picks when they don't seem to be gearing up to give McNabb a Super Bowl run? Andy can say he's happy with his D-line and linebackers all he wants but what else is he going to say when he misses a chance to improve it or weakens it by the team saving some money? I have said before that I have lost faith in McNabb but if Reid still has the faith he sure hasn't done McNabb any favors yet. Maybe a couple of trades for restricted free agents will come but they come at a cost. Less draft picks to work with. We'll see.
  • like i said in another post, mcnabb is the guy they can lay the blame on, think about it they dont even have to say a word at seasons end and the media rips the poor guys guts out about getting traded in the offseason, he takes all the heat for the their pathetic attempts to save money while making us think they did everything in their power to assemble a SB contender, i dispise the media anymore i believe none of what i hear and half of what i see
  • They still have time to show Mcnabb that they are behind him like Reid claims but this whole QB quandary started when the Eagles chose to offer Mcnabb more money and not an extension.
  • When are you, my fellow yardbarkers , gonna get it. They are gonna leave Mcnabb squirming in the wind or better yet trade him and have a new whipping boy in Kolb with no help. Just like Mcnabb.
  • ibleed: I hope you are wrong. I hope McNabb is gone so we won't have to worry about blaming him anymore. This is not a SB team with McNabb. Their shot was 2004 and they blew it. Still trying to hold onto 2004 is just sad. It is time to let it go.
  • i look at it like this if the plan is to draft new players and if thats the case im fine with that but tell us that and trade 5 and give kolb his shot
  • I absolutely agree!
  • Hes gonna get killed but the excuse will be the defense sucks.
  • Well Hollywood considering McNabb has been excused for the last 11 years Kolb should be owed at least one excuse, but let's see what he can or can't do before we start lining up his excuses already.
  • Mcnabb has been excused for 11 years?! im sure giving him guys like pinkston and thrash excuses him your a dam fool eazy
  • Last time I checked Pinky nor Thrash are on this team. What's your next Mcxcuse, because I know you got one.
  • Obviously the fans are going to be disappointed when they didn't land any of the "big names". Sure, Peppers would have been a great addition, but again..91 million dollars and 40 guaranteed? That's a lot of money to tie up in one player.

The only other difference maker on defense would have probably been Karlos Dansby. But again, you see how much the Eagles value linebackers. Especially with the suprise release of Will Witherspoon. Who actualy played really well in the beginning but disappeared near the end of the season. Is that who we REALLY want to go into the season with? He was about as effective as the rest of our back ups. And it was obvious when we lost to Dallas twice in a row.

Dunta Robinson and Antrel Rolle would have been nice pick ups. But again, how many Pro Bowl nods do they have between them? And how much would you really be paying for a player that isn't a HUGE difference maker?

The Eagles are obviously going in a new direction. Or at least going to rely on what has kept them successful over the years. The draft. Again, lucky for us the draft is almost catered to the Eagles needs. But now we will have to draft an additional linebacker to replace the ones we lost.

This years draft is very talented in both the safety and linebacker positions. The defensive ends are also pretty good, but there is a drop off after the top 3 IMO (Pierre Paul, Morgan and Graham). The release of Witherspoon almost makes you think that they are going to take Sean Weatherspoon with their first pick. Especially since NFL scouts project him to be a WILL linebacker at the next level. This would put us in a bind when it comes to filling the SAM position, but the coaches seemed to be high on Fokou and thinks he can do the job. If not, we could always pick up a SAM LB in the third round (since we have two 3rd round picks). Barring any unforseeable moves with restricted free agents and the current crop of free agents still available, it looks like our draft will go as follows:

    1st LB Sean Weatherspoon (WILL)
    2nd FS Nate Allen
3rd (possible trade back into the second): DE Tyson Alualu
    3rd LB A.J. Edds (SAM)
4th Best OL/RB/WR (RB Joe McKnight or Ben Tate/OG John Jerry/WR DeMarryius Thomas or Jacoby Ford

Well..that's what I would do. Let's see if I get anything right. haha
  • Let's wait till after the draft start killing the FO just like the season things go bad early and we over react and at the end we looking at the playoffs so let just wait till after the draft
  • and like all Drafts how many players work out? how many players become great? 1st round guys are like a 50 percent chance and that doesn't mean thye will contribute in the first year.

The fact is, the Eagles didn't make the moves to get us to the Superbowl this year. So to me it only solidifies getting rid of Mcnabb and starting Kevin Kolb. IF they don't do that, then the season won't even be worth watching.

  • no homo 44-6 was your superbowl, this is just payback...if you dont like it, log off and go beat your meat using your tears as lube from how we made you the 0-3gles.......oh yeah...that 1st 3rd and 6th didnt hurt us when playing the mighty eagles that were on there 6 game win streak....DID IT? remember how bad jackson was supposed to roast us? lmao that never happened..........the roy trade was stupid but so was releasing will witherspoon, keeping mcdookie, missing every free agent that you thought you were getting for the past 2 weeks, letting dawkins go and having only bums to fill his role, cutting westbrook with out so much as a goodbye, signing and still having vick on the roster and the list goes on and on..........if you want to act like the roy trade was all jerry has ever done,or chalk up our squad as being a product of bill(who by the way wasnt going to pick d-ware untill jerry talked him into that year) thats fine......but know this....our owner is better than yours and our roster as a whole is better than yours THE END

  • Joey Porter to the rescue
  • Looks like we'll be relying on rookiees for the defense again this year, or June 1st waiver wire garbage.
  • Macho man is no longer a rookie but he is not as good as his name implies.
  • Keeping McChoke tells me they are content on Choking...AGAIN!!!!
