The No. 2 seed Tennessee Lady Volunteers ended their run for a national championship in their Elite Eight game against Louisville on Tuesday night. Louisville led Tennessee by as many as 20 points in the first half. By halftime, the Cardinals were up 41-26. The Cardinals were led by Shoni Schimmel who scored 24 points. Senior Taber Spani led Tennessee with 18 points in her final game as a Lady Vol. Here’s what she said about her final game with Tennessee after the loss. “I can’t say how proud I am of this team and what we’ve accomplished. I think any Tennessee team, when you don’t make a Final Four that’s the great thing and the amazing thing about this program is no matter what the transition was, no matter what it looked like, no matter what excuse you might put out, if you’re a young team or not, the bar is the Final Four. And I think that’s what makes this program special. So to come short of that is disappointing,” Spani said. The second half had Tennessee fans sitting at the edge of their seats as the Lady Vols were able to cut Louisville’s lead to three, but the Lady Vols lack of defense against a powerful Louisville team kept the Lady Vols out of the Final Four for the fifth straight year after their appearance in 2008 when they won the national championship. Here’s how Twitter reacted to Tennessee’s end to the 2013-2013 season. Wow. Really didn’t see the #LadyVols losing this one. Still, amazing year that far exceeded expectations. — BasketballTime in TN (@BBallTimeMag) April 3, 2013 What an unbelievable season for the #LadyVols & the seniors who showed great leadership. Hats off to you ladies, we’ll get em next year!
