We're apparently still waiting for this to go down, but the Detroit News's Louis Aguilar reports that Michigan governor Rick Snyder's makig a public show of support for the Red Wings' rink and economic development project today in Lansing: Gov. Rick Snyder will tout the $650 million new hockey arena and 45-block entertainment district Wednesday afternoon as evidence that big Detroit projects will continue to move forward amid Chapter 9 bankruptcy. Snyder was scheduled to speak at 2 p.m during the Michigan Strategic Fund meeting where the fund, a state economic development agency, is expected to start the process for $284.5 million in 30-year bonds to cover the public portion of the arena’s construction costs. Red Wings mid-day news: on Cleary, Brunner, retiring numbers and scouting the Panthers

The Red Wings are theoretically going to stand pat for the next month or two, save re-signing Joakim Andersson and Gustav Nyquist, anyway, as the Wings are "capped out" and are sitting at the 50-man roster limit (no news as to whether signing Tom McCollum to an AHL-only deal removes him from the team's 50-man roster yet). During a chat on the Free Press's website...

Talking Brunner And Cleary

Anshar Khan of Mlive answered some questions regarding Damien Brunner and Dan Cleary.... On Brunner... It's highly doubtful that Brunner will return. He was seeking a multiyear deal worth around $3.5 million a season. The Red Wings offered two years at $2.5 million per season. They were hesitant to offer more to a player with no track record in the NHL (just 44 games)...

Team USA made things official and stated that they would not be skating at their orientation camp on August 26th and 27th, meaning that every one of the "big" Olympic-participating nations save the Russians don't plan on skating at all because ofthe stratospheric cost of insuring players' contracts... But Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard spoke with both MLive...

I understand the palpable, "Holy crap, it's late July and we're starting to talk about the Olympics!" excitement surrounding the past couple days' worth of "orientation camp" news and Monday's announcement that the Red Wings coach Mike Babcock would helm Hockey Canada's entry at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia... As we wait for more UFA news to trickle in...I thought it would be a good idea to keep you abreast of the US National Team developments.
