The Tampa Bay Lightning used a hat trick from Ryan Malone to stop the Carolina Hurricanes 5-2 Saturday at the St. Pete Times Forum for their first victory of the season. Malone's goal with 9:14 to play broke a 2-2 tie, and Steve Downie added a power-play score with seven minutes remaining for the Lightning (1-1-2), which lost a shootout against Carolina on Tuesday and another to New Jersey on Thursday. Malone added an empty netter for the final goal. Eric Staal and Rod Brind'Amour each scored power-play goals in the second period for the Canes (2-3-0), who was playing the second of a back-to-back and had a two-game win streak end. But goaltender Antero Niittymaki stymied the Hurricanes most of the game. Niittymaki stopped Staal on a shorthanded attempt with 7:34 left in the game and Tampa Bay leading 3-2.
