Last offseason, the Lions reportedly offered defensive end Cliff Avril, who was coming off a monster 2011, a three-year deal worth $30 million. Avril rejected the deal, and the Lions ended up franchise-tagging him, paying him $10.6 million for 2012.
At the time, the two sides were about $2 million apart per year, with Avril -- who had 11 sacks and six forced fumbles last season -- saying, "It was close. It was like the size of a small ditch in the road. Neither side wanted to cross the ditch."
After this year, in which Avril has recorded 9.5 sacks, that chasm might be wider than before especially when he went through a stretch of five games midway through this season during which he managed only two sacks and currently plays for a team that's 4-11. But Avril also doesn't regret not signing Detroit's $30 million offer.
"Once again, it comes with the business," Avril said, via MLive.com. "You got to take the good with the bad. There was a drought where I wasn't getting any sacks [earlier this season], and guys were like, 'Uh-oh, you're in trouble. You should have took the deal.' Just all kinds of different things. It is what it is. I don't trip. It comes with the business.
"Honestly, I look at it like I'm truly blessed to play in the NFL. Point, blank, period. I'm truly blessed to play in the NFL. I'm fortunate enough to be able to have a team that wanted me last year. Just let it be what it is after that."

Stafford, Megatron star in awkward church ad
As a Detroit Lions fan this is especially painful. I honestly don’t even know what the point of this commercial was, but it was a combination of terrible writing, acting, and execution. It’s so bad that you have to see it to believe it actually happened.Video via: Kensington Church YouTube Channel
Lions WR Johnson close to 2,000 yards receiving
The smile has rarely left Calvin Johnson's face since he broke Jerry Rice's NFL record for receiving yards in a single season against Atlanta on Dec. 22.
Don't let Johnson's smile fool you. Underneath that cheery expression, there's a fierce competitor who wants to make Rice's accomplishments a distant second to his own effort this year.

Lomas Brown regrets his comments, plans on reaching out to Scott Mitchell
Former Detroit Lions offensive lineman Lomas Brown now admits that he was wrong for allowing former Lions quarterback Scott Mitchell to get injured when they played together and wishes he could take it back.

Bears DT Henry Melton: Lions are a dirty team
The Detroit Lions are used to be calling dirty on defense by now, and it hardly seems to bother them. Ndamukong Suh has worked hard to earn that reputation with plays like this one, but it’s less common to hear an opponent accuse the Lions of dirty play on offense. According to Bears defensive tackle Henry Melton, Detroit is just an all-around dirty team.
“Dirty. They’re dirty...

Chicago Bears at Detroit Lions: Week 17 NFL Pick
Chicago Bears (9-6) at Detroit Lions (4-11)
Chicago is in a must win game here, but that doesn’t mean that this means more to them. The Lions would love nothing more here than to play spoiler and eliminate a division rival. However, unlike the Eagles against the Giants, I don’t really like the Lions here. The Bears have won every game this year in which they’ve been favored...
