Today the Orioles claimed Texas catcher Luis Martinez, essentially confirming what Adam Rubin reported earlier in the day that it appeared Anthony Recker was the back-up catcher and the team wasn't really looking at the addressing that area. Nothing against Recker but I would prefer they bring someone in to at least compete with Recker for the position and provide depth in AAA.  After all, Recker has only 27 major league games in which he hit .152 for experience, not really a proven commodity.  Additionally John Buck is a 32 y/o catcher, many catcher's at his age with as many games under his belt begin to break down. I suggested last week either claiming Martinez or Eli Whiteside just as competition, whoever lost out could be tucked away in Las Vegas mentoring d'Arnaud but both catcher have been claimed by other teams. I've also suggested bringing in either Chris Synder or Matt Treanor on a minor league deal with an invite to spring training, while that could still happen it seems like a less likely scenario.I understand that while d'Arnaud wont start the season with the major league team, they don't want to block him so when he is ready which could be anytime during the season he can be brought right up, but the Mets are incredibly thin at the position. Usually by now they at least one journeyman catcher slated for AAA, guys like Rene Rivera or Omir Santos, right now Edward Rohan is listed as the Las Vegas catcher a 24 y/o who hit .100 in Brooklyn last year. That suggests that unless prospect Travis d'Arnaud breaks camp with the Mets as the No. 1 catcher, which is not the likelihood, Anthony Recker should serve as John Buck's backup behind the plate. source ESPN NY
