The Los Angeles Lakers announced yesterday that they have signed center Greg Somogyi to a one-year contract. The contract is not guaranteed so Somogyi will be fighting for a roster spot when training camp begins on October 2. Former UCLA player, Reeves Nelson also agreed to a nonguaranteed, one year contract with the Lakers.   Somogyi went undrafted in the 2012 NBA Draft coming out of UC Santa Barbara. The 7’3”, 250 lb. center was born in Budapest, Hungary but attended high school in California. Somogyi, who has a 7’9” wingspan, is known for his defense and his ability to block shots. In his best season at UCSB, Somogyi averaged 4.6 points, 3.1 rebounds, and almost 2 blocks per game as a junior. In his last two years as a Gaucho, Somogyi had a combined 111 blocks. Somogyi is extremely raw but the Lakers’ lack of depth at center may give him an advantage in making the regular season roster. Especially considering reports that Dwight Howard may miss some time to begin the season.  ...
