The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs lead the nation in scoring offense averaging 51 points a game, they have an overall record of 9 – 3, and they will not be playing in a bowl game. How does something like this happen to a team that lost only 3 games by a combined 17 points? Louisiana Tech wasn’t left in the dark, they did receive an invite to the Independence Bowl, but had decided to see if any other bowls would invite them as the Independence is in Shreveport and that doesn’t exactly spell “bowl experience” for Bulldog fans or players. “We asked the Independence Bowl to let the games play out because we were told by the Heart of Dallas Bowl and the Liberty Bowls that they were very interested in us,” said Van De Velde Sunday night. “They (the Independence Bowl reps) called us on Saturday and put a deadline on us. We thought there would be a spot open for us in one of those other bowls. We asked them to wait so we could vet out these other options, but they wouldn’t.” Yahoo’s Graham Watson inferred that it was “bad blood” between ULM, the other school invited to the Independence Bowl, and the Bulldogs but Tech AD Bruce Van de Velde says “that was not a factor at all. We would’ve liked to be in a bowl.” In any case, this is a sad display of what is wrong with the college football bowl season. The nation’s number 1 scoring offense and a 9 – 3 team will be sitting out the post season while teams like 6 – 6 Rice, who Louisiana Tech beat 56 – 37, will be playing in a bowl game.
