Among the more bizarre rumors we’ve been hearing over the past few weeks was the story that LSU head football coach Les Miles was courting Cam Cameron to run the team’s offense. Honestly, I heard this about two weeks ago and dismissed it out of hand as a bit of a weird connection. Apparently, Miles is just that crazy. Jim Kleinpeter (awesome name) of the New Orleans Times-Picayune is reporting that LSU is working on a deal to hire Cameron as the team’s offensive coordinator. That is according to “a source close to the school.” Kleinpeter claims the deal is in the works but some details are still being figured out and an announcement is expected next week. Cameron was wildly unsuccessful as the head coach of the Indiana Hoosiers, and in a head coaching stint with the Miami Dolphins. Beyond that he has worked as offensive coordinator of the San Diego Chargers, and, of course, was famously fired by the Baltimore Ravens this season after being the team’s OC since 2008. Many (even Cameron himself) credit his firing with the Ravens’ incredible turnaround and run to a Super Bowl XLVII victory. The 62-year-old Cameron was also a long-time offensive assistant at Michigan, so he does have ties to the college game other than his stint at Indiana. Miles was unavailable for comment on Friday, but current offensive coordinator Greg Studrawa is expected to move back to coaching the offensive line after two years running the offense. LSU finished the 2012 season ranked 77th in the nation in total offense (374.2 yards per game) and 90th in passing yards per game (200.5). I’m not sure Cameron is the right fit in Baton Rouge, but it will be an interesting combination with he and Miles on the same sideline.
