Die-hard Miami (FL) football fan and former 2 Live Crew frontman Luther Campbell has never been shy about his dislike for booster and convicted Ponzi schemer Nevin Shapiro.
After Shapiro alleged in an August 2011 Yahoo! Sports report that he provided Hurricanes players with illicit benefits, Campbell called him “a jilted groupie who f*cked over a lot people” in a guest column for the Miami New Times. Later that fall, he sued Shapiro for slander and defamation.
Below is an excerpt of what Campbell most recently wrote about Shapiro, in a Tuesday post to his personal blog:
“Right now Nevin Shapiro is jumping off the walls in his cold, dark cell in federal lock-up. The disgraced Ponzi schemer has got to be losing his mind. I wish I was a guard just so I could watch him cry his eyes out. He promised to tear down the University of Miami athletic program with his salacious allegations against the U. Well Miami is not getting the death penalty. In fact, the school is only losing nine scholarships after waiting three years for the NCAA investigation against the athletic program to end.
“Shapiro is looking like an a**hole right about now. Let this serve as a warning against these people who pose as boosters who want to use these kids. This shows boosters with bad intentions that just because you give a kid a dinner doesn’t mean they should front your illegal activities.”
Now that’s the Luther Campbell so many of us were transfixed by in “The U.”
