The Bucs opened this weekend’s series with a terrible effort at the plate on Friday night, as they fell to the Marlins in a 2-0 shutout loss. Jeff Locke gave the Pirates a good chance to win, only allowed two runs, and struck out a career-high nine batters, but still probably left the game with a bad taste in his mouth. Locke walked six, and two of them in the sixth inning led to the game’s first run on an infield hit with the bases loaded. Jeff also allowed an unusually high eight hits, and the second run came across in the seventh when he made a bad mistake to Giancarlo Stanton…who launched it well over the LF wall for a monstrous homer.  So while it wasn’t really a terrible start for Locke, it didn’t really feel like he pitched all that well. The bigger problem for the Pirates, of course, was the offense. The bats were simply abysmal on Friday – five hits, one walk, and 11 K’s. Nobody had a particularly strong day at the plate and there weren’t many well-hit outs, either (McCutchen and Pedro may have had one each, but that’s about it). Miami is not a good team, and the Pirate bats looked bad (as they often do), but Marlins starter Henderson Alvarez and a few of their relievers looked very sharp. On the other hand, it was a fairly depressing moment when Chad Qualls came on in relief and easily retired Travis Snider and Michael McKenry. Oof. Ugly game for the Bucs, and they’ve certainly lost some momentum from the Washington series, especially on offense. They’ll have a chance to get it back during the rest of the weekend, but as they learned tonight it won’t be a simple walk in the park against the Fish.
