Miami Marlins pitcher Alex Sanabia claims that he didn't know spitballs were banned from Major League Baseball. His confession comes just days after cameras caught the right-hander spitting on a baseball after surrendering a solo home run against the Philadelphia Phillies. That run proved to be the only one Sanabia allowed en route to earning the victory. Perhaps his illegal use of the spitball is a reason why?Sanabia said Friday he spit on a baseball earlier in the week to get a better grip, not to get more movement on his pitches. He also repeated he didn't know it was illegal."I didn't know. I was in my zone and just grooving. It's something you live and learn from. I didn't mean anything bad by it or I didn't mean to do anything more," Sanabia said. "It's something that showed up that way and people all of a sudden just create their own perception of."Clearly Sanabia is trying to play dumb here. We all know what we say, though. He applied his saliva all over that baseball. However, Sanabia did pull the dirty deed so indiscreetly, and so openly, that it makes you wonder if he is actually telling the truth. But given the evidence, I for one believe he knew what he was doing. The 24-year-old later added:"I don't know what they expect from spitting on it," Sanabia said. "My intention wasn't to be like `Let's get more movement.' My intention was I need more grip."Sanabia was asked if he had done this before and said he hadn't, instead licking his fingers. The reason he chose to spit directly on the ball was because it was "super slick."Major League Baseball has yet to comment on the matter and doesn't appear that they are going to, either. So, Sanabia will probably escape any sort of punishment other than the lashing he is getting from fans and the media.I believe it is safe to assume the California native won't be pulling this trick anytime soon. Or will he?Via Big League Stew
