With the 3rd overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Minnesota Vikings select Left Guard, Matt Kalil from USC.
The Minnesota Vikings consummated a trade less than an hour before the draft to drop down one spot and gained a fourth (118), fifth (139) and seventh (211) round picks in the process.
That huge sigh of relief you just heard was Christian Ponder (and most Vikings Fans) as the Vikings make the right choice and select the top Lineman in the draft to protect the QB’s blindside for the foreseeable future. The trade offers didn’t come together for the Vikings, and they wisely decided to continue building on the offensive side of the line with their first pick in the draft.
Rick Spielman, the GM of the Minnesota Vikings was able to pull off the trade that gave the Vikings 3 additional picks and still gave them a cornerstone Left Tackle. Kalil projects to be a day one starter for the Vikings this season and well into the future.
Even with the worst secondary in the l...
BEST OF MAXIM
The Vikings trade down a pick and get their man in OT Matt Kalil out of USC.
At nearly 6″7 and 306 pounds, Kalil helped the Trojans average 456.8 yards of total offense. The Trojans’ offensive line only allowed eight sacks, none of which was allowed by Kalil. For his effort, Kalil was named to several All-American teams, while also becoming the 12th Trojan offensive...

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. Once Minnesota Vikings general manager Rick Spielman was finished dealing at the top of Thursday's first round of the NFL draft, he made a phone call to USC left tackle Matt Kalil and ended the long-awaited decision to pick Kalil over cornerback Morris Claiborne and receiver Justin Blackmon.
Kalil's phone rang with a Minnesota number and he knew he would...

Rick Spielman fooled us all— and perhaps that was his plan after all.
Following weeks of speculation that the Minnesota Vikings would take Morris Claiborne over Matt Kalil, the team has taken its left tackle of the future. Minnesota stayed in the fourth spot after trading down with the Cleveland Browns, a club that swapped picks to secure running back...
You’ll have to hit the refresh page every few minutes to see my latest thoughts since we’re not very high tech yet here on the site. But if anybody’s reading, we appreciate it!
5:25: I’ve got 2 mock drafts out there, one that has the Vikings going with Kalil and another one with them going with Claiborne. Had a lot of draft info this offseason. Team Draft Interests, Draft...
If you know anything about the Minnesota Vikings’ draft strategy, you know that they’ve yet to fully figure it out. This is a team with plenty of options, but without their sights set on just one.
So, who are the players, in question, that the Vikings are targeting? Here they are:
1. Matt Kalil, Offensive Tackle, USC
Matt Kalil is a dominant lineman with tremendous size. Believed...
As Matt Kalil and Nick Perry fight the East Coast jet lag en route to the NFL's lavash draft ceremony Thursday in New York, Trojans like Shane Horton are sitting at home just hoping to have a phone call at any point this weekend.
Continuing with companion piece of the not-so-obvious but meaningful draft picks, are the top six smartest first round draft picks in the 2012 NFL Draft.
#4 Matt Kalil
Yes, this is one of those obvious picks, so technically it does not qualify as interesting enough to make this column. However, the manner in which the Vikings acquired Kalil was as genius as the Cleveland...
Alright, all these so called “experts” have made their picks, now it’s time to make mine. I just hope I get one right. 1. Indianapolis Colts — Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford 2. Washington Redskins (from St. Louis) — Robert Griffin III, QB, Baylor 3. Minnesota Vikings — Matt Kalil, OT, USC 4. Cleveland Browns — [...]
