Darren McCarty and Kirk Maltby But that doesn’t mean that several former players can’t get together to talk about their past success. Former Red Wings players Kirk Maltby and Darren McCarty got together to talk to fans about the 1997 Stanley Cup Championship. Maltby and McCarty signed autographs, besides talking about the Stanley Cup Championship, at the Sound Board in Detroit. Maltby was acquired by the Red Wings from the Edmonton Oilers on March 20th, 1996. After the trade, he played for the Red Wings through the 2009-2010 season. McCarty, on the other hand, played for the Red Wings from 1993-94 through the 2003-04 season. He would sign with the Calgary Flames for the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons.
