Raise the Jolly Roger!:
Tony La Russa
Los Angeles Dodgers
St. Louis Cardinals
San Francisco Giants
The rosters for next week’s All-Star game have been released, and two Pirates are on the list. That’s one more than we usually see before any replacements start coming in — but not not quite as many as we were hoping for this season.
Andrew McCutchen was a lock to make it. It’s pretty sad that he only finished 7th among NL outfielders in fan votes, but I’d have to think he’ll see plenty of game action next Wednesday. In fact, he may even sneak into the starting lineup anyway. Matt Kemp reportedly won’t play in the game, so manager Tony LaRussa will need a center fielder. Cutch wouldn’t be the next man in line based on the fan or player voting, but those are based strictly on outfielders, not positions in the outfield. He’s the only reserve that plays center field. Don’t count on this — LaRussa could move Melky Cabrera to CF (he’s played there in past seasons but not this year…in related news, how is Melky Cabrera a starter?!), but I’d have to think McCutchen starting is a legit pos

Andrew McCutchen has been named to the National League All-Star team for the second year in a row. He is sporting a batting average of .346 and ranks in the top 10 for home runs and RBIs. Bucs starter A.J. Burnett won his 8th straight start against the Phillies on Thursday. Put simply, he is dominating the mound right now. Burnett is 9-2 this season with a 3.31 ERA and 69 strike outs. Only 5 pitchers in the league have more wins.
After 81.2 innings so far this season, Burnett has given up 72 hits, 29 walks, and 31 runs (30 earned) which results in a WHIP...
There is absolutely zero defense played in the NHL All-Star Game and in the Pro Bowl. THey’re meaningless games so why not let the fans decide who gets to go. But the MLB All-Star Game has home field advantage on the line for the World Series - that’s a big time prize if a wild card team makes it to November. The whole reason for doing so was “to provide additional incentive...
Pittsburgh Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen, who was named to the 2012 N.L. All-Star squad on
Sunday, has been voted the National League Player of the Month for June.
Final: Pirates 8, Astros 7
WP: Joel Hanrahan (4-0, 2.32 ERA)
LP: Wesley Wright (0-2, 3.91 ERA)
A.J. Burnett had easily his worst start since the 12-run debacle in early May against St. Louis as he gave up six runs in 5+ innings. But the Pirates’ bats were able to bail him out.
Down 4-0 in the fourth inning, Andrew McCutchen hit an opposite field two-run homer to cut the lead to...
The Pittsburgh Pirates return home from a successful trip hoping two of their key players will be back on the field.
It's uncertain if All-Star center fielder Andrew McCutchen and third baseman Pedro Alvarez will be in the lineup Monday night when the Pirates try to hand the struggling Houston Astros a season-high seventh straight road loss.
One day after spraining his wrist...
The Pirates open a four-game series with Houston on Monday night at PNC Park. Right-hander James McDonald will start for the Bucs. The Astros counter with right-hander Jordan Lyles.
The Pirates taking 2 of 3 from the Cardinals is never a bad thing, but they had another great chance for a win yesterday and let it slip away in the 5-4 loss. Andrew McCutchen had the day off so his sprained wrist could recover, and with no Cutch, you better hope that you can get some good starting pitching. That didn’t happen.
Erik Bedard struggled…again. He only made it...
Pedro Alvarez hit a grand slam in the first inning off suddenly scuffling 10-game winner Lance Lynn and Andrew McCutchen had two hits before leaving with a sore left wrist, helping the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-3 Saturday for their fourth victory in a row.

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Pedro Alvarez hit a grand slam in the first inning off suddenly scuffling 10-game winner Lance Lynn and Andrew McCutchen had two hits before leaving with a sore left wrist, helping the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-3 Saturday for their fourth victory in a row.

The Pirates are seven games over .500. A win tonight would put them into uncharted territory north of .500; the last time the Pirates were at least eight games over .500, they were 30 games over .500 on the last day of the 1992 season. This is the sort of thing that I find to be both exhilarating and depressing all at the same time.To put the Pirates into this unmapped stratosphere...
