This may surprise you, but the Red Sox tandem of Brock Holt and Brandon Snyder at third base lately wasn't exactly the most productive effort in Major League Baseball.
Perhaps noticing that fact, Sox General Manager Ben Cherington pulled the trigger today and called up Prodigal Third Baseman Will Middlebrooks from Triple A Pawtucket. The Boston Globe's Peter Abraham notes Middlebrooks will be in Kansas City for tonight's game, and he'll play third and bat ninth.
Since being banished to McCoy Stadium in late June after struggling at the plate with the big club, Middlebrooks has hit a respectable .268 with 10 home runs in 45 games for the PawSox. In his last 10 games, according to Abraham, Middlbrooks is 12 for 38 with two dingers and six RBI's.
Holt and Snyder? They're a combined 5 of 37 with three RBI's in 11 games.
Aside from the news of the call-up dashing my prediction that we'd see wunderkind Xander Bogaerts at the hot corner before Middlebrooks this season, the move also appears to indicate that Sox brass intend to stick with Bogaerts as the Shortstop-of-the-Future at Fenway. (Bogaerts, by the way, is hitting a solid .289 with eight home runs and 27 RBI's in 52 games in Pawtucket this season. His OPS is .845).
That makes sense, since the Sox earlier this season sent Former-Shorstop-of-the-Future Jose Iglesias to Detroit in the three-team deal for Jake Peavy.

Just as I predicted a few weeks ago, Will Middlebrooks finally got the call from the Red Sox that he was waiting for.
After spending almost two months in the minor leagues with Pawtucket, Middlebrooks was back in the Sox’ starting lineup Saturday night playing third base.
Demoted on June 25th, Middlebrooks played in 45 games with the Pawtucket. He had a .268 avg...
The Boston Red Sox have recalled Will Middlebrooks from Triple-A Pawtucket and put him in the starting lineup.
Middlebrooks was set to play Saturday night against the Kansas City Royals.
Middlebrooks hit .192 with nine home runs and 25 RBIs in 53 games, while striking out 60 times in 203 at-bats before Boston sent him down on June 25. He hit .333 in his past eight games in the...
In a long overdue move, the Red Sox called up Will Middlebrooks from AAA Pawtucket and immediately inserted him into the lineup on Saturday in Kansas City. The presumed reason for the move was a "Fenway Flu injury" to Brandon Snyder—who was placed on the disabled list. Look for a similar move up of phenom Xander Bogaerts before the rosters expand on September 1st.
According to a report by Rob Bradford of Weei.com, the Red Sox will call up third baseman Will Middlebrooks on Saturday. The corresponding move is believed to be Brandon Snyder to the 15 day disabled list. Middlebrooks' season has been a mixed bag including stints with the Boston Red Sox and the Pawtucket Red Sox. When looking at Middlebrooks' stats he was only...
The Red Sox wanted an offensive spark at the hot corner and they got it in Will Middlebrooks on Saturday night.
The newly recalled third baseman went 2-for-4 on the night, contributing two RBIs and scoring two runs. Middlebrooks provided the boost at the plate that Brock Holt and Brandon Snyder had failed to provide, but he admitted to feeling some pressure coming into the game against...
The Boston Red Sox have recalled third baseamn Will Middlebrooks for AAA Pawtucket. Middlebrooks will replace Brandon Snyder who will be placed on the disabled list.
In 21 games for the Sox this season, Snyder has hit .209/.227/.419 with two homers and seven RBIs.
Middlebrooks was sent down to the minors after a dismal start to the season hitting .192/.228/.389 in just over 200...
Will Middlebrooks rewarded the Red Sox with a nice effort in his first game back in the majors. Before the game, however, manager John Farrell was forced to answer questions about why Middlebrooks ultimately got the nod over top prospect Xander Bogaerts.
Farrell said before Saturday’s game that Middlebrooks, who played in 53 games with the Red Sox earlier this season before being...
Game 119: Boston taked game three of the series, 5-3
The return of Will Middlebrooks to third base helped spark the Red Sox to a 5-3 lead in Kansas City Saturday night, as his two hits lead to two RBIs and a couple of runs scored. The top of the order combined for six hits and two RBI and helped drop KC starter Jeremy Guthrie to 12-8 on the season...
Sometimes, a change is a good thing, even if it’s not the best thing.
(What the heck is he talking about?) Allow me to explain.
The Red Sox absolutely needed to do something about their third base situation, as the platoon of Brock Holt and Brandon Snyder hasn’t been working out. The duo is hitting a combined .108 (4-for-37) with no home runs and three RBIs since July 31, and...
After losing the first two games of their four-game set against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium, the Red Sox finally broke through on Saturday night behind a terrific bullpen effort, winning 5-3. On Sunday afternoon, Boston sends John Lackey to the mound to try and split the series.
Saturday marked the return of Will Middlebrooks to the Red Sox and the starting lineup...
After a stellar rookie season with the Red Sox in 2012, Will Middlebrooks struggled mightily in the first half of 2013, and was sent down to Pawtucket on June 25. But now with no clear-cut starter at third, Middlebrooks will get another chance to prove his worth Saturday night against the Royals.
Middlebrooks was called up from Triple-A Pawtucket on Saturday in a move that sent Brandon...
In a kind of surprising move the Boston Red Sox called up Will Middlebrooks instead of the highly regarded Xander Bogaerts on Saturday. Middlebrooks was demoted to Triple A after a poor start so you would think they’d give Bogaerts the chance but the team didn’t think he was quite ready yet, defensively. Strange to hear that right? A top prospect being held back for defense...

This problem is not going to change by itself.
Using Brock Holt is not working.
Brandon Snyder can't seem to get it done either.
Platooning Brock Holt and Brandon Snyder has not been effective.
With Xander Bogaerts out performing Will Middlebrooks at Pawtucket, there seems to be only one solution, call him up sooner rather than later...
When Jose Iglesias got traded, the door seemingly opened for Xander Bogaerts’ arrival or Will Middlebrooks’ return. Instead, the Red Sox have since gone with a combination of Brock Holt and Brandon Snyder down at third base.
Should the Red Sox continue to go with the Holt/Snyder platoon, or is it time for Boston to shake things up?
Holt and Snyder have both played hard since...

This Royals team is no joke and they proved it yet again by taking 3 from the Sox. The Royals will probably not surpass the Tigers in the Central, but they are playing some very good ball.
The Sox struck early when Victorino scored on a throwing error in the first. Then the Royals scored 4 runs over the first 3 innings off of John Lackey and the Sox could...
