If the preseason has indicated anything, it’s that the future of the Montreal Canadiens is not that far from present. Veterans entering the twilight of their career find themselves more frequently checking their rear-view, where objects in the mirror are closer than they appear.
The new season will be one of transition for the Habs. The NHL roster is composed of many veterans, a number of which are in the final year of their contract or approaching the wrong side of 35. A familiar quote from John McCrae’s poem “In Flanders Field” stretches across the team’s dressing room wall in the Bell Centre:
“To you from failing hands we throw the torch. Be yours to hold it high.”
