Poca High School in West Virginia beat Scott High School on Friday night 40-39 on what was one of the best buzzer-beating shots from a high schooler we have ever seen.
According to The Charleston Gazette, Scott had just gone ahead 39-38 on a jumper in the lane by Matt Dolan with 1.5 seconds left. Poca called a timeout and set up a play that would give them the win.
The Dots (great nickname) took the ball out under their basket and elected to heave the ball down court. Sophomore Matt Chandler passed to sophomore Noah Frampton, who took one dribble, turned and fired a jump shot to win the game.
The play was reminiscent of Christian Laettner’s “The Shot” that gave Duke a 104-103 win over Kentucky in the 1992 NCAA East Regional Finals.
Chandler and Frampton talked to the Gazette about the play that won the game.
“That was the first option,” Chandler said of the heave to Frampton. “After they called that timeout, we thought they were going to double-team Noah on the baseline on the other side of the court. Coach said either throw it to somebody at halfcourt, or throw it down [to Frampton]. No one was guarding him, I threw the ball, probably one of the best passes I’ve ever made. As soon as it left my hand, I knew he was going to make the shot.”
Frampton said of the pass: “It couldn’t have been any better."
“What was going through my head is I prayed before I shot the ball and I said, ‘Lord, help me make this shot,’” said Frampton, who made the shot for his ill father who was unable to attend the game.
Poca is now 10-1 thanks to the improbable shot.
