Magic Johnson sat down for a candid interview with TMZ earlier this week in the wake of his son EJ walking hand-in-hand with his boyfriend down the streets of LA. Johnson and his wife Cookie have made it clear that they fully support EJ’s decision to come out publicly, which has led to a great deal of praise from athletes and other people who feel the Johnsons should serve as an influence for others in a similar situation. As an NBA legend, MLB owner, father of an openly gay son and someone who lives with HIV, Magic is at the center of many issues involving the LGBT community. And if a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers ever decides to come out, Johnson said he will be his biggest supporter. “If that ever happened I’m going to support them, 150%,” Johnson stated emphatically. “(I’ll protect them) as much as I can. That’s who I am, I’m a protector. I protect my family. That’s why I was really upset that people were attacking my son and my family. “As an owner, you really have to support the person. And, then, help educate the public. Once the organization and the owner (supports the gay player), then everybody else has to say, ‘OK, we’re going to support them.’ Or, you just have to deal with it.” Magic said that he told EJ that his decision to come out is going to be “bigger than you” and will have a tremendous impact on the gay community. He said that an athlete has yet to come to him to reveal that they are gay and ask for advice, but he has received calls from athletes who are talking about “somebody else” struggling with being gay. Magic also talked about when he found out EJ was gay, saying that his son never went to him but that he and his wife sat him down at about age 13 to have a discussion. The goal, he says, was to make sure to protect and support their son. Finally, Magic discussed how he feels about some of the hateful reactions that have surfaced on African-American blogs and other forums. The situation can’t be easy for the Johnson family, but the way they are handling it is admirable and should help pave the way for acceptance. If an athlete really is as close to coming out as this report says he is, Magic could be one of many influential figures to lean on. Report: Marcus Smart overslept, could get less playing time

BOSTON — Marcus Smart might see his role diminished for the Celtics as they look to stave off elimination Sunday at TD Garden. Smart arrived late to the team’s shootaround ahead of Game 4 of Boston’s first-round playoff series with the Cleveland Cavaliers after oversleeping, head coach Brad Stevens said in his pregame news conference. Stevens said the rookie point guard...

DeMarco Murray: 'I'm not worried about the Cowboys'

The Dallas Cowboys made it quite easy for running back DeMarco Murray to seek out other teams last month after they did not offer him the contract he desired. Along came the Philadelphia Eagles with their deep pockets, who signed Murray to a five-year, $40 million contract. This was a price tag that the Cowboys were not willing to pay to keep Murray playing in Dallas. Harboring...

Turner has great quote in defense of Bridgewater

Minnesota Vikings’ quarterback Teddy Bridgewater choked during a particular portion of his pro day workout last year. This was something that may have caused him to slip to the 32nd overall pick in last year’s draft. The exact drill where Bridgewater struggled was when he was to throw a pass over raised brooms which were supposed to simulate an oncoming pass rush. Bridgewater’s...

Gary Bettman's quote about expansion makes no sense

Expansion continues to be a hot topic in the NHL and Gary Bettman was recently asked about the possibility of a new team joining the Eastern Conference. Based on the current structure of the league (14 teams in the West and 16 in the East), the obvious solution is to place two teams in the West to balance things out. Would Bettman consider adding a team in the East if the right...

Beltre sends Richards invoice for three broken bats

Garrett Richards displayed his Cy Young contender stuff during a win Friday against the Texas Rangers in just his second start of the season. The 26-year-old went seven strong innings allowing just three hits, three walks, and two runs in the Angels’ 3-2 win. Among his highlights included holding Rangers cleanup hitter Adrian Beltre to...Read More

Herschel Walker: Vikings should trade Adrian Peterson

Former Minnesota Vikings running back Herschel Walker is no stranger to blockbuster NFL trades. The two-time Pro Bowler was involved in the biggest trade in modern NFL history when he was sent from the Dallas Cowboys to Minnesota for a bevy of players and picks that helped set up the Cowboys dynasty of the 1990’s. Over 25 years removed from that trade, Walker is speaking up...

Report: Raiders fielding calls about fourth overall pick

Depending on how the top-three picks in the upcoming 2015 NFL draft play out, the Oakland Raiders could very well be trade-down candidates. It’s likely that their primary target at this point is USC defensive lineman Leonard Williams, who most experts conclude is the best all-around defensive player in the draft. However, there’s a decent possibility that the Tennessee Titans...

Andrew Luck to students: 'I'm only 25, I don't have advice'

Indianapolis Colts’ quarterback Andrew Luck was invited to participate in a lecture series at DePaul University. When asked if he had any advice to give the assembled crowd of students, Luck, with his dry sense of humor, stated this (via the Indy Star). As far as advice? I’m only 25. I don’t have any advice. Luck was also asked other questions during his appearance...
