After its tremendous shackle shoes gaffe, adidas could probably learn a thing or two from Nike about tact.

Nike recently launched its BE TRUE 2012 campaign, which shows support for the LGBT community. As the shoemaker explains: “BE TRUE 2012 celebrates the achievements of the New York City, San Francisco and Portland communities as progressive leaders of LGBT life with city-specific footwear releases and accompanying hat and tee.”

The sports apparel giant is releasing unique, rainbow-themed shoes for each of those cities. The Portland kicks, pictured above, went on sale last week in the city for $130. On Friday, both San Francisco’s Flytops ($140) and New York’s Air Royals ($120) go on sale.

We applaud Nike for this move, and we’re sure the folks over at Nike’s Beaverton campus are giddy that this is happening in wake of their archrival making a regrettable PR blunder.

  • I can't believe there are only two other pppl who didn't leave bigoted comments. I'm straight & want a pair,too. The only thing that would make me happier is if a portion of the profits were going to a charity such as Human Rights Campaign, but awsome! They are still raising awareness. The people wearing them will be a sign to the bigots that they aren't the majority anymore. The majority believe in equality in 2012.

  • Farewell Nike...At 48 I am sick and tired of corporations taking on social issues which offend the majority of it;s customers and think we will continue to participate. I have been purchasing thier products and setting trends for decades, and the likes of NIKE, J C Penney with thier new managment quit stuffing your opinions on your customers. New Balance has been my alternate shoe and now is my primary supplier. I regret the thousands of dollars invested in your organization only to be betrayed so. Liberals beware, the tollerance of the masses' is being tested to the breaking point. We have not been disrespectful towards anyone if they act like us and mind our own business. But if tollerance and civility are not acceptable and what you require is endorsement; perhaps you should hold your breath and see how that works. For me and my friends we are tireing of forced endorsement and will start ourcomplaints with our dollars and eventually respond with defensive menuevers less tollerant. KAT

  • I'm not going into the LGBT side of this but will just say those aren't exactly good looking shoes. I suppose it's all marketing. Put a rainbow(ish) color to it and a public service marketing angle and it sells. I get it. Still ugly, though. :)

  • I'd prefer everyone to vote with their dollars should they choose to and just shut up in regards to the hate lectures. Just cause you don't agree with the lifestyle (I respectfully do not) doesn't give anyone the right to be so ugly. I hate that people argue religous ideals in the midst of being hypocrites in the hate speeches. Within the major religion in the States, we share a belief in all being created equally and all being loved equally by a God regardless of our shortcomings in this regard or others. Where's that on these posts? Ugly shoes though!

  • Wow, it's a pair of shoes, people. Why are you all so hateful? If you don't like them, don't buy them. It's pretty simply. As far as all of the gay comments, I think they're completely uncalled for. I'm surprised that here in America, the country where all men are created equal (unless you're gay, black, Jewish, or a woman), that people bash one another so much. If you don't believe in gay marriage, then don't marry a gay person. Why does it matter what someone else is doing with their life? I don't care who you married or didn't. I certainly don't give a sh*t if a company like Nike or anyone else supports the LGBT community. I'm more concerned about jobs, college tuition because I'm still a student, the wars overseas, or immigration. Let gay people get married, let them enjoy the same rights, why not? I certainly don't care what ANYONE else does. So sad to see people spewing hate in the name of God. My God doesn't know hate and he certainly doesn't tell me to hate anyone. He tells me the opposite: to love all and not to Judge. Only HE CAN JUDGE. Maybe I'll go buy a couple pairs of these shoes.

  • These shoes and the promotion are AMAZING! It's phenomenal that a company as large as Nike with such a wide reach is taking a stance to help achieve equality for all people. It is a slow fight but one that's worth the effort and struggle. I speak only for myself but I say job well done and thank you for supporting equality.

  • Any company or anyone supporting EQUAL rights for everyone regardless of being straight or gay deserves a pat on the back. I hate to watch the news anymore when all you see is everyone trying to beat down the other guy. People just out to hurt other people, just because they feel like it. Killing each other, killing our own children, bullies, the constant fighting with one another for ratings. Our world has become a violent one and it truly makes me sad that we can't get it together and just love one another...
