Just when you thought a couple of siblings would have some special connection on the field, the Upton brothers go out and collide tracking a fly ball in the outfield.

New York Mets shortstop Omar Quintanilla flied a ball to left center with two outs in the top of the fifth on Tuesday. B.J. Upton, who plays center for the Atlanta Braves, seemed to be calling for the ball, but younger brother Justin did not yield. The two ended up colliding. Though Justin, who is more muscular, did not seem to bothered by the collision, B.J. stayed on the ground for a bit before getting up and playfully shoving Justin as he exited the field. B.J. did make the catch to end the inning and keep the game scoreless.

So, no, just because they are brothers does not mean the Uptons have a “special connection” on the field. And what’s even weirder is this happened at home where it was likely quieter.

The Braves signed B.J. as a free agent during the offseason, and they acquired Justin in a trade. Since starting off the season scorching with 12 home runs in April, Justin has cooled off and posted an OPS below .653 since then. B.J. started off terribly, batting below .147 in each of the first two months. He has picked it up since then and has an OPS close to .900 in June. Can you believe the Braves are 13 games over .500 with most of their lineup hitting below .250? Just wait til some of those guys pick it up.

Should Atlanta Braves Announcer Joe Simpson Be Charged With an Error?

Joe Simpson (right) calls Atlanta Braves baseball with Chip Caray Let's face it, baseball announcers are often left looking for material to fill in when games are moving slow. When you have a pitchers dual going on with little or no offense, it makes for some gaps in the action. Atlanta Braves announcer Joe Simpson was calling the game between the Braves and New York Mets when Mets pitcher

Atlanta Braves Minor League Weekly Report (6/8-6/15)

It was a good week for Braves Minor League action.  While the team records may not indicate, a few players in the Braves organization had huge weeks at the plate.  Every Braves minor league team is now eliminated from winning the 1st half, except Mississippi.  The M-Braves have one game left in the first half, as they trail the Mobile BayBears by ½ game.  I’ve added the Rome...

Why is Andrelton Simmons hitting leadoff?

Heading into the season, there was much hand-wringing over the fact that the Braves would strike out at an alarmingly brisk pace. So far, they have, racking up 615 Ks, good enough for second most in baseball, behind only the Astros. The flip side of that coin, however, is that they’ve hit 91 home runs, also good for second most in baseball, behind the Orioles. The Braves have ridden...

The Atlanta Braves have placed Evan Gattis on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right oblique, according to Mark Bowman of MLB.com. His injury wasn't revealed until this...

Braves Have A Slumber Party

After his walk-off home run early Tuesday morning, in a game that was rain delayed until eleven o’clock, Atlanta Braves’ first baseman Freddie Freeman said in his interview that he and several teammates would be spending the night at Turner Field. The slumber party-goers must have watched too many movies and had too much popcorn as the Braves were held hitless for six innings...

Another "June Swoon" For the Atlanta Braves? Maybe Not

Brothers B.J. and Justin Upton collide in a June 18 game at Turner Field Writers note: Just as I was about to click "publish" on this column, Chris Johnson belts a 3-run homer off of Mets pitcher Shaun Marcum. So, there's that. In a number of recent seasons, the month of June has not been kind to the Atlanta Braves. In fact, since 2004, the Braves have only had a...

Mets Nip Braves 4-3

Matt Harvey pitched no-hit ball for six innings and fanned thirteen batters as the New York Mets held off a late Atlanta at Turner Field to nip the Braves, 4-3. It was just 15 hours after Freddie Freeman’s walk-off homer, that the Braves fell to the Mets in game 1 of Tuesday’s doubleheader. The Braves sent Alex Wood to the mound for his first big league start.  Wood was stellar...

Closer Look at Closers: Aroldis Chapman and Craig Kimbrel

When people talk about young, hard-throwing closers, the first names in their heads are Aroldis Chapman of the Cincinnati Reds, and Craig Kimbrel of the Atlanta Braves. These two have come in over the last couple of years and taken over as two of baseball’s most dominant closers, with Kimbrel taking away the rookie saves record in 2011 away from Texas Rangers closer-turned...

Why You Never Get a Trade Done – Kantor’s Fantasy Corner

We’re nearly at the halfway point in the baseball season, so how many trades have you made this season? Acquiring BJ Upton and CJ Wilson for Wil Myers and Andrew Cashner marked trade #4 for me. In a season where I look poised to miss a top 3 finish for the first time since 2006, I’m doing everything I can to improve. I recently had a friend tell me that he wouldn’t complete...

Pitino on Chris Jones: As good a guard as I've coached

Rick Pitino has coached some pretty good guards during his nearly 40-year career in college basketball.  Recently at Louisville, there was Russ Smith, the two-time All-American, and Peyton Siva, the point guard who led the Cardinals to a national championship in 2013. He had a host of talented players at Kentucky, too, the school with which he won it all in 1998.  A player currently...

Nets set to pay record luxury tax bill for 2013-14 season

The Brooklyn Nets and owner Mikhail Prokhorov have never been shy about spending money, but this is a little crazy. According to Brian Windhorst, the Nets owe $90.57 million in luxury taxes for the 2013-14 season...

Sherman, on Crabtree: I hope to 'choke him out'

Seattle Seahawks CB Richard Sherman and WR Michael Crabtree treated us to one of most epic battles of the 2013 NFL season in the NFC Championship Game. The two were matched up against each other time and time again, and at the end of the day, Sherman won—tipping a jump-ball to teammate LB Malcolm Smith for the game-securing interception in the red zone. LeBron reaching out to players to join him if he leaves Heat?

TweetThe free agent watch focus has shifted from Carmelo Anthony to LeBron James, and we’ve done a good job here of avoiding chasing rumors.
