Muhammad in LA for tournament; college ball in the fall

The No. 1 player in the country, Shabazz Muhammad, is coming to Southern California for the weekend. Muhammad will lead Las Vegas Bishop Gorman (18-4) against Whitney Young (Illinois) (12-7) in the main event of the Nike Extravaganza at Mater Dei on Saturday night. The game will be streamed live right here on FOXSportsWest.com at 9 p.m. Whitney Young is led by 6-11, 275-pound sophomore center Jahlil Okafor. When the two teams met earlier this season, it was Bishop Gorman winning easily, 84-51, in the third-place game of the Beach Ball Classic in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina behind Muhammads 32 points. As for his college ball, Muhammad remains uncommitted. Many UCLA Bruins fans thought it was all but a done deal that he would be in a UCLA uniform next season for the re-opening of Pauley Pavilion. It was reported last summer, Muhammad along with Kyle Anderson, Jordan Adams and Shaq Goodwin all took an unofficial visit to UCLA at the same time. Muhammad, at the time referred to Anderson as one of his best friends, and mentioned the two talked about playing their college ball together. They agreed the only place that could happen is in Westwood. While Goodwin has committed to Memphis, Adams and Anderson are both on board to be Bruins but that doesnt mean its an automatic that Muhammad will follow. In his latest diary with SLAM Magazine, Muhammad reiterated that he was down to six schools. Those schools are Kentucky, Duke, UCLA, Arizona, Kansas, and UNLV. USC, the alma mater of his father, Ron Holmes, was thought to be a dark horse but are apparently no longer in the running. The Bruins were thought to be digging themselves a hole trying to land him because of the subpar play on the court this season.Earlier this season when speaking of how UCLAs struggles have affected his recruitment, Muhammad told FiveStarBasketball.com, UCLAs a great program. They struggled early and watching other teams like Kentucky do well, it kind of gets your attitude going to the bottom of them, Muhammad said. "Theyre a really great program and still a lot of interest in them. Theyre a great program and theyre going to continue to work it out and hopefully they can have a great season. Muhammad says he expects to make his decision after the season, most likely in April. It was announced on Thursday that Muhammad will play in the Jordan Brand Classic on the West squad. The game will take place in Charlotte on April 14. Anderson was also selected to participate. Hell play for the East squad.
