So we have approached the one-week mark until the NFL Draft. I've laid out a position-by-position preview over the last few weeks and I hope that's given you all some idea about what the Chiefs need to achieve through the draft. This could end up being the Chiefs' most mysterious and exciting draft in history given that there are a few new sheriffs in town. However, if I could predict the behaviors of the new sheriffs, I would predict that they: 1) prefer value over hype; 2) love to gather picks and are disappointed that they are missing a marquee 2nd round pick; 3) realize the Chiefs have several needs and most of the players slated to be top 5 picks are not among them; 4) believe that the players who would make the biggest impact on the Chiefs could slip past the top 10 and some even past the top 20In other words, we can come up with all these fancy mock drafts, but those mock drafts never account for the wide array of options the Chiefs have to choose not to pick at #3. Instead, it seems like most people are content with forcing a guy who doesn't belong in that spot onto the roster. As the expression goes, "it's like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole."We can hypothesize about all these crazy scenarios about how Mark Sanchez can be moved around if the Chiefs come out with some fancy trade package that will somehow incentivize a division rival, the Broncos, to give up multiple picks. We can talk far and wide about drafting guys like Aaron Curry or Eugene Monroe, even though they don't provide particularly high incremental value to the team. We can talk about drafting guys like Michael Crabtree or Brian Orakpo, even though nobody seems particularly jazzed up about either of those guys. And we can talk about drafting guys like Everett Brown, BJ Raji, or Rey Maualuga, even though most of those guys probably belong in the bottom half of the top 10, maybe even the bottom half of the top 20. And we can talk about the Chiefs asking for the moon to trade down, but given the strength of the draft class, they will likely need to sacrifice some trade value. But do those moves make sense? If anything, it points to how much the Chiefs probably hate their draft position this year.
