In January I picked Evgeni Malkin as the MVP so far this season.  In February, Henrik Lundqvist took the MVP lead.  I am back to picking Malkin as MVP.  When I picked Lundqvist he was posting a .940 saves percentage and a 1.78 GAA.  Those numbers have fallen to a .934 saves percentage and 1.89 GAA.  While those are still Vezina Trophy numbers they are not good enough to be MVP.  Lundqvist isn’t dominant enough versus the other goaltenders in the game.  Malkin is the NHL’s top scorer with 88 points.  He is second on his team with a +15 +/- rating.  He has done this while only playing 64 of his team’s 71 games.  This puts him second in points per game in the league behind teammate Sidney Crosby (who has been limited to 11 games played) and significantly ahead of anyone else.  Evgeni Malkin is the current MVP at this point in the season.

Lundqvist's Positioning Helps Mentally & Physically

Elliotte Friedman at CBC Sports has this quote from former Rangers back-up goaltender Alex Auld on what makes Henrik Lundqvist so good..."Henrik is so efficient. Because he plays so deep, he doesn't need to move much. He's able to take in more [mentally] and there's less confusion going in his head. He's focused. Able to read the play. It's very hard to teach...

Pens light up Jets to start a new streak

The March of the Penguins continued Tuesday Night as the Pens put a thumping on the outgunned Winnipeg Jets by a score of 8-4.  The game was played at a frantic pace as both teams seemed to abandon any thoughts of playing defense.  The action was continuous as both teams saw countless scoring chances, but the Penguins top-end talent just proved to be too much for the Jets to overcome...

Neal nets hat trick, Malkin has 5 points as Pens jolt Jets

James Neal scored a hat trick and All-Star Evgeni Malkin had his second five-point game against Winnipeg this season to power the Pittsburgh Penguins to an 8-4 triumph over the Jets on Tuesday. Sidney Crosby, playing at home for the first time since his comeback, collected four assists to give him nine helpers in four games to pull the Penguins within one point of the Eastern Conference...

Callahan, Lundqvist, Del Zotto back in NYR lineup

The slumping New York Rangers have forward Ryan Callahan, defenseman Michael Del Zotto, and No. 1 goalie Henrik Lundqvist all in the lineup against the Colorado Avalanche as they try to hold off the charging Pittsburgh Penguins. Callahan, the team captain, returns after missing three straight games and six of eight because of a bruised right foot. Del Zotto is back after he sat...

Morning Skate Notes: Anisimov Out; Lundqvist Starts; Lines

The Rangers report that Artem Anisimov (shoulder) participated in the morning skate, but will not be in the line-up against the Devils tonight....great to see AA practicing again. Assuming he should be back at some point this week. Will be interesting to see who gets scratched when he's ready. The Rangers also report that Henrik Lundqvist will get the start tonight....he better...

Rangers Hold Off Devils; Recap

Two smart periods and one sloppy period equals Rangers win. It wasn’t perfect but the Rangers got what they deserved out of the game as they beat the Devils 4-2. They were the better team throughout and ten minutes aside in the second controlled play, were defensively solid and could have scored more if not for some sharp goaltending by Brodeur. On to the notes from the game...

Postgame: Varlamov Steals the Show as Rangers Drop Second Straight to Avs

It’s not often that you see an opposition goaltender steal the spotlight at Madison Square Garden, but that was the case tonight. All things considered, the Rangers responded well to Thursday’s 5-2 loss to the Penguins. That response, however, was nothing Semyon Varlamov couldn’t handle. Varlamov led his team to a 3-1 victory tonight, because if it weren’t for him, this would...

Postgame: Rangers Fulfill Needs, Including Clinching Playoff Spot, in Win Over Devils

The New York Rangers needed a response tonight and they got it. The Rangers needed two points to spread their lead over the Pittsburgh Penguins for first place in the East, and they got them. The Rangers needed to clinch a playoff spot with a win against their rivals and they got it. Tonight’s 4-2 win over the New Jersey Devils at Madison Square Garden was all you could’ve asked...

Fantasy Hockey ONE (3/21)

It seems like the question last night was more who did not score for Pittsburgh than who did. We are kidding of course.  However, despite the hat trick from James Neal, he was not our Fantasy POTN.  Now that does sound crazy of course and no Sidney Crosby was not either (despite four assists).  There was an even a hat trick from the enigmatic Ales Hemsky from the Edmonton...
