The Nationals were swept in a two-game series against the Tigers today in a 11-1 loss in the Motor City. Gio Gonzalez gave up 10 earned runs and 11 hits in just three and two-thirds innings on the way to the route. The Braves are scheduled to play tonight, but before that happens, the Nats are 10.5 games behind them in the division and seven games out of the NL Wild Card spot. To complicate things further,  the Nats would have to have better than a .700 winning percentage for the rest of the season to win 90 games. On the other end, the Braves could go below .500 and still win 89 games. So unfortunately, the Nats are back to four games below the .500 mark, and their playoff hopes are almost certainly a distant memory with August on the horizon. One Highlight and Many Lowlights -The Nats got on the board early after Jayson Werth drove in Denard Span on a sacrifice fly, and that was essentially the last thing that happened right for them in the game. -Gio gave up four runs in the second inning, including back-to-back home runs to Alex Avila, who hit his first career grand slam against Stephen Strasburg yesterday, and Torii Hunter. This gave the Tigers a 4-1 lead, but they were nowhere near done. -Before the second inning ended, Anthony Rendon committed his 12th error, his fourth at third base, on the season on a throw to first. He was playing third with Ryan Zimmerman as the designated hitter at an AL park -The fourth inning was the last for Gonzalez, as he only recorded one out in the inning but gave up six more earned runs before being pulled. -To make matters even worse, Ross Ohlendorf, who came in for some long relief, was pulled after just 11 pitches with an apparent injury. Craig Stammen came in to pitch as the second long reliever, and pitched brilliantly for two and one-third innings to help stop the bleeding. -Bryce Harper winced during an at-bat in the seventh inning after a check swing. He stayed in the game to finish the at-bat, but he was later replaced by Roger Bernadina. Just For Fun I have nothing. There was nothing fun about this game at all.
