Perhaps a year later than many fans of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Ohio State Buckeyes would prefer, but Cleveland native David Lighty will try out for the Wine and Gold on June 28th with hopes of providing a much-needed scoring punch from the shooting guard position.

Per The Plain Dealer’s Mary Schmitt Boyer, the stop in Cleveland is one of several that the swingman has planned, but playing for the Cavaliers would be the 24-year-old’s ultimate goal.

“That’s one of my goals — to get [my mom, Emily] to see me play more,” said Lighty.

Having spent last season in Italy after not being drafted following his senior season at Ohio State, Lighty averaged 7.5 points and 15.3 minutes in eight games with Bennet Cantu, later averaging 10.7 points and 30.9 minutes in 23 games with Vanoli. The move was sparked by the desire to achieve more playing time. In the NBA, Lighty’s playing time would likely descend, but the shooting guard does have outstanding offers in Europe in the event he does not latch to a stateside franchise.

Attending Cleveland’s Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School, Lighty was named Player of the Year during his senior season in 2005. As a senior at Ohio State, Lighty averaged 12.1 points per game, hitting 42.9 percent of his three-point attempts.
