In his weekly Monday Morning Quarterback column, Peter King detailed the New York Jets’ contract offer to Nnamdi Asomugha.
King reports that the Jets offered a 3 year, $30-million deal — salaries of $8 million this year, $10 million in 2012 and $12 million in 2013.
Asomugha ended up signing a 5 year, $60 million deal with the Philadelphia Eagles.
When news first broke of Asomugha signing with the Eagles, I said that the Jets didn’t want to give Asomugha a contract that exceeded the one they gave Darrelle Revis and that appears to be what happened here.
I’m still shocked that they were considered the overwhelming favorites for Asomugha and were in hot pursuit, yet were only offering $10 million per year. I mean, Jonathan Joseph got $9.75 million per year.
It would have been a coup for the Jets if they could have signed him at that price. If they would have offered $11 million per year (still less than Revis), would he have chosen the Jets?
A great question, but we’ll never know the answer.
